We rent but would like to own... maybe we'll buy a place upstate eventually?
We haven't figured out where we want to live for the Rest Of Our Lives though, so will have to figure that out before buying.
Do you rent or own? Which would you prefer?

We own, which I prefer. It was something that was really important to me to do before we had a baby.

We own! We'll sell it eventually to move to a bigger house. This isn't our "forever home" but it is perfect for us plus a LO or two!

We own. I like having our own space and I like that we are building equity. But, since we are responsible for absolutely everything in the house, we have to live a lot more frugally and live with things like second-hand appliances and old furniture at this point. We aren't huge DIY house people, so having the freedom to paint/renovate rooms/etc. is not really something that interests us, so owning doesn't really do anything for us in that department.

We own, and that's our preference. The only thing I miss about renting is being able to call the front office when something was broken/damaged and having them deal with it. But I don't miss constantly hearing other people and I love the space we have now. We have a huge backyard and it's just nice to have our own space.

We own and that’s my preference. As long as you make somewhat wise real estate decisions and put a fair amount down (or make aggressive monthly payments), I think buying real estate is still a smart investment, even post-burst-bubble.
We own a condo and also just bought a home. We were planning on selling the condo, but already have a renter lined up with a 2 year lease for several hundred more a month than our mortgage. That’s the ideal situation, IMO; having someone else pay our mortgage while we build even more equity.

We own, and I prefer to own. We rented for a long time and feel like it was a waste of money. Our mortgage payment is the same as our rent was and we knew we wanted to stay in the area for awhile so it was a good decisions for us. I also like having the freedom to do whatever I want with our home such as paint, renovations, etc..

Own, I much prefer that.
@mrbee: there are so many beautiful places less than an hr north of manhattan! Love Yonkers and Hudson Valley! HV is amazing in the fall! And tons of wineries!

We rent, but would like to buy either an apt in Brooklyn or a weekend home in upstate ny at some pOint. Dh is going crazy over the low interest rate that we could get right now. I don't mind renting at all though; much less responsibility and less risk.

We own and I prefer to own. While it was cheaper to rent since home maintenance is a wallet killer, I still prefer to own since we gain equity and are free to do as we wish. I also don't like sharing a wall with someone.

We also own, but I did enjoy renting as well. Both really have perks and downsides. We wanted to own where we were renting but couldn't afford the area, so we moved outside of town a bit (we still commute/carpool together about an hour each way!) but having our "forever" home is really great! Well worth it I think
Our rental apartment home was amazing, though! All new appliances, granite, nothing to worry about really and a great neighborhood with amenties! Sometimes I miss it!

We own. Here in WI you can rent, but it's much more common to own a house. I love it! I feel like I'm actually putting my money towards something. Plus we just got our house assessed by the city and it's assessing at almost double what we paid for it 4 months ago!!

We rent and we are house hunting! We are waiting to see if a seller's lender will approve a short sale.

@autumnlove - GL with the SS! I remember our buying process with some short sales and it's tough!

We rent. We won't be able to own for awhile. Houses where we live are expensive. But I'm fine with renting for now. We are in a duplex and the garages separate us from our neighbor so we never hear her. And we have a giant back yard with a nectarine tree and grapes. It's pretty nice.

@highwire: I know! we are super excited! the person we bought the house from was trying to sell it fast so it was listed SOOO low! and it was on the market for 3 days i think when we put the offer in on it, and she accepted the offer immediately

We rent. We are pretty transient at the moment, so it doesn't make sense to buy. Plus, we are students so we are pretty poor, ha! Just don't have the capacity to save much right now. Once we figure out where we want to be long-haul, we can work on saving to buy a home. I do love our rental home though, it's a funky little 1970s cottage in a quiet neighborhood! It has been a pretty great first home for us, and I will definitely be sad to leave in a few months.

We rent, and have no major issues with it. We will own eventually mostly because I love home projects, painting, etc. and because it annoys me to buy a house for someone else by renting. That said, we don't know for sure where we want to settle down and we won't buy unless we can make a significant down payment. So, we'll be happily renting for a while!

Even though it's a lot more work and money, we love owning.

we rent, but i can't wait to buy a house one day. for our current phase of life, i like the easiness of renting. we have the perks of a yard and single family home, but we don't pay for water, sewer, or trash. we also don't have to do any type of upkeep or work on the house, which can be seriously pricey. buying a house is in our 5 year plan, though. hopefully after hubs has been at his job a few years.

Both! We own a condo which we rent out and we rent a townhouse style apartment which we live in. We'd prefer to own, but in this market right now it's definitely better to rent if you can find a good price. We got stuck but now we're thankful because we ended up getting "stuck" in a great place for REALLY low rent that hasn't gone up in 4 years. Our landlords are awesome.
Eventually in the future, once the market changes a bit, we'll own the place we live in. People are just not putting their places on the market because they don't want to take a loss, and we're not willing to settle on such a huge purchase (and we don't want to move again!!!).

We rent and I'm not sure what I prefer. I would love to have my own home but like you I don't know where I want to live forever and a house could potentially make me feel trapped. I want to really love a house if we own
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
We own. I love owning our home. I don't miss apartment living at all and the price to rent a house here is more than a mortgage payment.
bananas / 9628 posts
we rent. i'd like to buy something in the near future. i'm kind of a chicken about it, i'm afraid of something happening & not being able to afford to fix it =/ right now houses are so cheap & we'd be first time home buyers, so we don't have to worry about a loss from selling a previous home. still scares me! haha
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
We rent, and we prefer it that way for now. We will want to own one day, but right now we are still in the city, and I like that we can move pretty easily when we want to, without worrying about selling one place and buying another and working the timing out right. I love our neighborhood, but we are in a 1 bed apartment, on a month to month lease, so when we need the second bedroom, it will be easy to pick up and move. We want to be in the city for another few years but not 5 or more, which is the minimum amount of time I'd want to be in a place we bought.
Eventually we will want a house with a yard, at which point we plan to buy. Our rent is way below market right now, too, so that helps!

We own, which we prefer. It has thankfully turned into a good investment vehicle.

We rent and I'm very happy with our awesome apartment. We couldn't afford to buy the same quality of space in a comparable neighborhood in Brooklyn. We'll also be moving around a fair amount for my husband's work in the next few years, and have no idea where we'll settle down long-term.
Plus last night listening to the wind and rain I was super happy that any storm damage would not be our responsibility!

We own, but we bought at the worst time in 2007 right before the housing market crashed. That is the only reason I'd prefer to be renting right now.

Both. We own a home in the states and rent in the UK, where we currently live. We prefer to own.

We're yard people, so I voted own. But owning can be a PITA sometimes. There's a certain security in knowing that a solution to anything broken is just a phone call away! IMO, it makes sense to buy if you plan to stay in a location for at least 5 years - that's if you want a yard and if the market is in your favor, and if it's affordable in your area. That's a lot of ifs! Hehe!
But what about Paris? I recall Mrs. Bee saying she wanted to experience a Parisian life for a year? That would be oh-so cool!

Own, I can't imagine going back to renting! Pets do throw a wrench into renting. I love owning except for when things break down. We just survived our fridge and dryer both breaking down, and a year ago it was the dishwasher.
We are still underwater in our starter home and not really sure where we want to buy our forever home, but I do love owning most of the time.

OWN!! I'm happy that I'm not throwing away money every month on something that doesn't belong to me.
We also plan to stay in this house for a long time, so that was a factor when we looked at buying a house. We previously owned a 2 bdrm condo, and selling it to buy this house was actually an easy transition, since we bought a brand new home and didn't have to wait for previous owners to move out.
coconut / 8279 posts
We've done both and prefer renting - at least for now. I wouldn't give up living in the city for anything at the moment and sadly, we will never own here unless I run into a million dollars somewhere
The house we owned was not in the city and we absolutely hated it there. We only stayed there for 8 weeks, haha. We rented it for a few years before finally selling it. We will not be making that mistake again soon.

we own a place that we rent out (couldn't sell it without taking a major loss) and rent the place we live in. since we've been burned by the housing market, for right now we definitely prefer renting--less stress!

We rent currently, but we are looking to buy a condo within the year.
Someday I hope to own a house, but that is a long way down the road (or we need to move out of the city).

Own! Just so I know our money is going somewhere. Although right now I wish we were renting instead of being stuck with a condo that has lost half it's value.

@MrsBrewer: wow that's awesome!
We own. Def prefer owning although it is nice to not worry about things like repairs and such when you rent...
