We use this now and then and it usually works like a charm. I don't get it though... what do the kids think is going to happen when you get to 3?? Actually I'm gonna ask them, because I've always been curious why it works so well.
Does counting to 3 work on your kids?

@Mamaof2: We almost never get to 3, so I don't even have to threaten anything! But actually you're right, maybe they think there's an implicit timeout involved.

The consequence comes at 3. We tell her, we are counting to three and if you don't do X then Y will happen.

uh no. if i say "one..." he finishes for me "two, three!" i don't think he has any idea that it's suppose to be threatening...

This absolutely works for us. When we get to 3, they get a time out. They hate time out.

I'm trying to implement this now. Instead of going straight to time-out, I feel like it gives him a chance to change his behavior. So far he doesn't get it, and ends up sitting time-out anyway. I hope he picks up on it soon

Yes! Sometimes when he gets mad at me he will count to 3 and then try and put me in a timeout.

@mrbee: it works but we spell out the consequence, i.e. back in your room by the count of three (because it is too early to be up and about) or no daniel tiger today. Pretty effective for us!

On occasion, it's rare I have to use it. When I do, I count down from 3 instead of counting up to 3. Even though he can easily count to 10+, I think children generally have a hard time realizing when the adult gets to 3, that's where the consequence is.

@mediagirl: This. OMG, this, and it drives me bonkers. And sometimes when she sees me getting mad, she asks "Are you gonna count, Mommy?" And cackles.
