Last night DD read me "Blue Hat, Green Hat". It's more like she recognized all the pictures, not the actual letters, but it was so cute to hear her "read". When did your LO start reading, whether it's memorizing or real reading?

Around 13 mo my lil guy loved to sit down and look at books flipping through the pages and studying them. He would be all quiet and I would think he's opened some drawers or something but nope- he would be sitting quietly studying his books. He's 16 mo now and still likes to study them but he does not "read" nor read

@mrs.kiwi: my LO is also 16 mos and does the same thing! His favorite book right now is a first 100 trucks and he sits so quietly studying the pages that I often think he must be into something naughty I guess quiet doesn't always mean they are up to something

@dolphin: yes our DD loves to read to us. Blue Hat Green Hat was the first one she "read" to us.

She memorized books a little before 2, started reading some sight words at 2/ 2.5, and now is reading more sight words and sounding out longer words at 3. Not yet a fluent reader though.

She started reciting a few books from memory around 22 months. I can't wait until she starts reading!

She's been "reading" to herself for a while but lately she wants to read all the nighttime books to us. As she "reads" she quizzes us on the pictures like we would do for her, "Mommy, can you find the yellow sun?". So funny. She's 2.5.

@Corduroy: that's so cute she quizes you!! DD is 2.5 as well and just started wanting to read all her night time story books to us. Yesterday was the first time she actually finished "reading" the whole book out loud though. Love it!

She LOVES to 'read' books. She knows a few words here and there from sheer repetition, but mostly she just names things in the pictures and flips through the pages.

C just turned 2 and has recently started "reading" (reciting) books to us. It's so funny because we will start reading a book to her and suddenly she starts saying all the words, when we didn't realize she knew that book. It's so adorable. She's been flipping through books and looking at pictures for a while but only started the reciting recently.
@Corduroy: C had also started asking us questions. Not just about books, but I'll be like, oh what color are your shoes? She'll say, Purple. What color are mommy's shoes? It's so funny but it makes sense since I'm always asking her questions like that.

LO1 is 4.5 and started reading Bob books earlier this year (sight words and sounding out basic words). My favorite stage was when he would memorize books word for word and "read" along with us. His favorite book to memorize was Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site.

@yin: that was the first book my son fully memorized. I was pretty astounded because within 3 weeks of owning it he knew the whole thing and he wasn't quite 2.5! My son is now 4.5 and still looooves to "read". He doesn't know how to read and I don't think he has any site words, but he can sit literally for an hour and meticulously study books page by page. At almost 21 months my DD isn't quite as concentrated and focused as my DS, but she will also sit quietly for 20ish minutes and look at books. The both love being read to.

Yup. Right around 2, he had several books memorized and would sit and read them to himself. My mom said I did it, too, as a kid - I memorized the books on record and then read the books to myself.

Don't remember when he started, but my 22 month old has a couple books memorized. He loves to reads those. Other books, he will "read" by using the pictures/remembering the story from when we read it.
