I just found out from a coworker that our county only offers half-day kindergarten. I don't have any LOs yet so I had never really looked into it here. I was a little surprised as everywhere else I have lived has done full-day,
How common is it for a school system to only offer half-day kindergarten?

Full day.
But some of the local private schools only do full day M-Th, and kindergarteners have Fridays off.

Our town offers both but only half day is free. Full day is $1800 for the year. Extended day is also extra of course. Wednesdays are half days for all kindergarteners.

8:00-1:50. Not really sure if that counts as full or half. Kinda seems in between.

As of 2013, full day kindergarten here (Vancouver, BC). As a teacher and a parent, I find it can be a little long for many children. Going to preschool/daycare prior to, helps a great deal.

full day! It's a big reason we opted to do Pre-K(4) as a full day program as well.

@MamaG: I wished we had a full day prek! Ours is only 2.5 hours. Pointless when you both WOH! No saving daycare $ till kinder for us.

In my hometown, it's a half day. Where I live currently, I just found out it's a full day!

As a kid, I went to half day, but seeing that a lot of schools are now full day for K.

It's weird. All schools in the district offer full-day, but you have to pay a fee for it at about 1/3 of the schools. The other 2/3 are free. At the schools that charge a fee, you can make arrangements for your kid to go a half-day for free. I have no idea why it's structured this way, instead of charging a lower fee across the board, except that most of the fee-charging schools appear to be in "richer" neighborhoods. I know our state Supreme Court has mandated full funding for full-day kindergarten (among other things) and there's a huge fight between them and the legislature about it, so maybe the fee will go away by the time DD is in school...who knows.

@regberadaisy: Unfortunately its not really a savings. It's a private pay program through our school district. There are typically only 80 kids that get in, this year it was expanded to 100. It's the same as what we were paying in daycare expense.

@MamaG: oh you're paying for it. Bummer. Ours has an option through a local daycare. But since it's not ours it's not worth it to switch my older one.
I'd assume it was a full day kinder program but I can't find any information online confirming this. I've just emailed the school secretary to find out what it will be in 2017!

Ours is half day but you can pay for full day, which I think we will probably do.

Our school district has free 1/2 day K or you can pay $3400 for the year/$340 per month for full day.

So DS did before and after care at his old DCP - they did drop offs and picks up to K.
Kinda sucked that I had to pay for another year of DCP but I like that DS started with 1/2 day - its much more work than when I was a kid and he was pretty exhausted by the end of the day!

Ours is a full school day 8:05-2:10. We will be doing after school care as well.

The district we live in is full day but they district we may open enroll LO in is half day. I think they may offer extended day for a fee but I haven't done that much research since it is still two years away! We are also considering private school which would be full day.

Full day but they are doing half day since lots of parents complained about not having the option and their children not being ready for full-time. I'm so happy for full day Pre-K! Can't wait for next year.
