If you were going to go somewhere that would take about 12 hours to drive or if you flew, you'd have to fly an hour and a half and then drive an hour or so... which would you do? We have 2 kids aged 4 and 1. Planning possible summer vacation. Thanks!

We would definitely fly. DD gets carsick easily so it's an easy decision for us.

We just drove but it was 12 days with lots of pit stops. For us the drive was an important part of our trip so we could see more family and friends. And it was nice to have our own car and not pack for air travel.

Fly. We are doing a similar trip tomorrow and flying is so much easier with the kids and we wouldn't lose two whole days of just travel.

Depends on the kids. With our first it was always drive. Then we had the second who is a random vomiter. It became fly. Now I'm too anxious to travel and don't find it fun so we are taking a few years off.

I would drive. My kids are good road trippers, and I love having them see what others view as flyover country. Plus I like the flexibility and cost savings driving gives us.

My husband and I are split on this. He would almost always prefer fly and I would prefer to drive. I think with 2 kids and so much stuff, its just so much easier for me to pack and organize things if we can just shove it in the car. Packing for flights takes me FOREVER with lists and weighing the bags and its so stressful. Also DS1 is a loud cranky traveler and if the kids are going to scream, I'd rather it be in the privacy of my own car.
We live a 6-7 hour drive from my folks or a 75 minute flight, and I keep arguing that between parking the car, dragging the luggage, checking in, going through security, waiting in the boarding area, flying, getting off the plane, getting the bags, waiting for DH to go get the rental car, properly installing all the carseats, and then driving from the airport to our destination, its not really that much of a time savings. Like, I seriously did the math and I think it saves us like an hour. Not to mention the cost.
We have to go see my family in May and I convinced DH to drive. We are going to leave in the middle of the night so that the kids can continue to sleep in the car until we arrive in the morning and then hang out with their grandparents.
In your situation, being that you have to get a car and drive another hour after you get there, I would probably drive. Buttt my husband would vote fly.

No question fly. I don't even like 5 hours in the car with kids.

I'm inclined to fly too. But it's so expensive to fly a whole family... I actually never mind the drive there, it's coming back that is a pain.

Fly for sure. In my experience, traveling w lo1 gets worse the longer shebis confined to one space. So, shorter time period to sit still on an airplane wins.
Plus carsickness...
And fwiw, my hometown is a similar distance from our current city (flight time is about an hour, drive after about 45 mins) and it's a super easy trip. It would take about 11 hours to drive and that's always a bigger deal (did that a bunch in college pre-kids and it still sucked!!)

Fly. We don't own a car, so we nearly always fly. We are going on a road trip this summer (renting a car), but that's obviously different since we will be stopping and visiting along the way.

We go to MB every year and drive - its 10 hours
2 years ago we went to FL and drove - it was 15 hours
Kids do great in the car, we stop a lot and its WAY cheaper than flying

The only thing I'm thinking is the extra expense and hassle - if you fly you then have to pack carseats, rent a car, drag all your stuff through the airport and then from the airport to the rental car place...I might do what @gingerbebe: suggested and leave in the night so by the time the kids wake up for the day some of the drive is over. Or take a leisurely drive over two days.

I think you have to look at both legs of the trip, going and coming. If you only have a certain amount of days to spend on the vacation, are you willing to sacrifice 2 days for getting there and back?
