My daughter's ears stick out a little, but I figure they'll disappear once she has hair. @Mrs squirreld's comment reminded me of how much I was self conscious about my calves, even in grade school - because of my mom! I'm sure your friend's an excellent mom and it's so hard to NOT want to do all we can to help our babies, but kids that age will make fun of anything. Hopefully the teasing will pass and her DD will forget about it. I know nothing about the procedure but the anesthesia part sounds scary.

I found another page that mentions when the optimal time to get them done:

"Since there's no shortage of skin or cartilage in the prominent ear deformity, it is perfectly amenable to early diagnosis and correction with ear molds, best started in the first week following birth. If the opportunity for molding is missed or fails, surgical correction of the prominent ear deformity is generally deferred until 3 to 5 years of age. We prefer correction at approximately 5 years of age since 90% or greater of ear growth has occurred by that age. With the growth of the ear completed at the time ear pinning surgery is performed, we believe there is less error in obtaining a precise adjustment to the projection of the ear."

@banana: I had my ears pinned back when I was 12. I'd suffered years of teasing about it (my ears were cute and tiny, but they did stick out and it was awful when I had my hair back, which my mum did to me ALL THE TIME, grr), It was a very simple operation, I had local anaesthetic so was awake the whole time. I was meant to be in and out of hospital the same day but I ended up feeling quite sick and throwing up a bit so was kept in an extra day... they think it was either a reaction to the anaesthetic or because my centre of gravity had changed, thanks to moving my ears. I had them bandaged up for a week and they were very bruised when the bandage came off but I am SO GLAD I had that operation! It honestly changed my perception of myself and I have no regrets at all, other than I wish it had been done sooner. If your friends daughter wants it done, I would recommend they at least speak to their doctor about it, it could save her years of teasing later.

I will be the first to say I HATE my ears. I never grew into them. I got teased and called "alfalfa" as a kid, my family just disregarded it or made a joke and still don't think it's a big deal. Sadly my son got my ears and I feel so badly because he won't be able to hide them like I can,

My ears stick out, and I definitely got teased (Monkey Face....). I had a friend who had hers pinned back when we were in grade 6, but I never did. Sometimes they bother me, but it is something I've learned to accept.

I also got teased for being super tall in school, and there is nothing to be done about that. Kids tease... that's what they do.
