I've been reading a couple of articles and I'm tempted to try out a menstrual cup but I'm not sure what to expect or even how to properly insert it and use it.
Advice? Suggestions? I feel really...stupid...asking this.

I have a moon cup and so do many of my friends now. It is amazing, cheap and if it is in properly you can't feel it at all (yes I used to think I couldn't feel tampons) and they do not leak.
You have to fold it length ways in quarters and insert it above your pubic bone but not really high. Mine had a silicone bit you could pull on to get it out which you had to trim. I cut it all off once I realised it was unnecessary as it can be uncomfortable if left too long. It takes a couple of uses before you get used to it but I imagine so did tampons...

@Snowdrop: would you compare this to the divacup? I can't seem to find anywhere here that shows online that they sell it in store

@babycanuck: yeah I just googled it and they look the same. Might even be the same thing under a different name

I have the Divacup and I love it because it saves me money and it's really easy to travel/go out because I don't need to take any tampons. However, I have had some issues with 'leaking,' You have to be sure that the cup is suctioned. Fold the cup and put it in, but sometimes I need to move it around to make sure I feel/hear a suction noise.

alright so I got the divacup...struggled a couple of times but now got in it. Let's see if I did this right and if I leak at all. I'm worried it'll get pulled up too far on it's own.

I always turn it in a circle three or four times after it's inserted to make sure it's completely open and properly suctioned.

I used the Diva cup and think its great. Agree on turning or checking to make sure it us fully open and suctioned. Maybe wear a panty liner for first few times as you're getting the hang of it.

@babycanuck: I've been using one for several years now (4, maybe?) and really love it. I had the Diva to start with, and switched to Lunette because I found the slightly firmer plastic was easier to position. I always struggled to get the Diva to unfold once it was inserted. I grab down at the base where there are some ridges (not the stem) and turn to make sure it's fully open, and then push towards my cervix/pull back to make sure it's seated properly. I only have leaking issues if I don't empty half-way through the night on my heaviest flow day. I just use a cloth pad that one night for extra coverage, and the leakage is super-minimal. Other than that I do everything I would normally do.

I love my cup. They are the best. Sometimes mine would move to high for me to grab easily. I have always found if I take a shower or just wait a little and relax it moves lower or is easier for me to grab. It won't get lost forever.

Can someone explain the benefits of using a cup vs tampons? I haven't heard much about cups and it all sounds crazy to me! But if there are better reasons to use a cup I'm very interested!

@Danizaur: They save money, they aren't associated with TSS, they are great if you are ever in a situation where getting supplies might be tricky (traveling, camping, etc.), you can always have it with you so if your cycle isn't predictable you don't have to worry about not having what you need, you can wear them for longer without needing to empty... I really prefer it.
@maddyz: I find if you push with your kegel muscles (not contract, but push; like you're trying to push it out), it will move it down further so you can more easily grab it. Some people leave the little stem part longer to make it easier to grab, too.

I've used one of the disposable cups -- the Instead Softcup-- and like them quite a bit. I have never used them on my absolute heaviest flow days, but for mid- to lighter flow days it's great not to have the same time constraint (they can stay in somewhat longer) as tampons...and they're great for swimming, exercise...and even sex!

Google live journal menstrual cups. Best resource on the web! I love mine!

@Danizaur: to add to what @Mrs. Twine: has said they are also better for you as they are not drying (don't absorb) so less likely to upset natural balance or get thrush.
