Education Secretary Hearing

I hardly ever post my political opinions on FB (I'm blue in a VERY red state) but I couldn't hold back on her. Money should not be able to buy you a position like this, and it's proving it can, and it's scary. Our children need us to speak up about this. I've written and called my (very red) senators on her, I had to feel like I was trying to do something and voice my opinion.

Another teacher here. I am livid, outraged, beyond angry and frightened by this woman's nomination and likely confirmation.

In my 'free time', I'm co-chairing a planning committee to create a research based Policy Summit for diverse teacher leaders of our state to come together around one educational issue at a time. It is an environment to help educated voices swim upstream and/or forge relationships with those in power to help get them educated about what works and doesn't work. Posting to this thread to give hope and an idea for teachers to get involved. There are things we can do. If not this year or the next, then keep in mind as a seed for future action. I do this in my free time --with the help of a team-- because I believe qualified teachers need to also stay in the classroom to teach students and not just abandon ship for upper management when there is a teacher shortage.

She reminds me of DH's ex-boss. Ex because she fired most of the talented teachers, DH included, and if she couldn't fire them she made the kind of offer they couldn't accept (like hours that directly conflicted with other obligations) so they had to "quit." Instead she created a lot of BS jobs, and rumor has it all the new hires are her buddies. She's gotten caught with her hands in some cookie jar and is "retiring" soon, but the damage is done.

In my neighborhood public schools have been rather sad for a long time and nothing any education big hat does seems to change that, so a lot of people might be thankful for the chance to get their kids out of the system without going broke. But what will happen to public schools with so many families leaving, and a clueless Betsy at the helm?

I don't expect any opposition from the Senate. The dumber people are, the easier to make them believe fake news, and that benefits all politicians.

Sadly, head of the committee Lamar Alexander, the one who set up the twisted rules to try to get her confirmed, is my Senator. I emailed him (and my other Senator also) about how unqualified she is.

It's clear most anyone would be better at the job than her. If she is confirmed, we will know these jobs really are bought.

I am a teacher and I am appalled. Charter schools are very different from private and CA has publicly funded charters that follow all of the same rules as public schools - it can be done well and fairly but there are many issues to work out. Vouchers essentially subsidize the private education of the rich. A typical Boucher is $8k, a typical private school in my area is $13-40k.

She thinks States should be able to decide what to do about educating students with disabilities!!! If education was for profit, why would schools educate a kid with any sort of disadvantage?

I am all for change in education and I think unions are shielding bad teachers but we have an obligation to educate ALL children and we need all the money and support possible to do so.

This country is so backwards when it comes to education!
    We need TEACHERS!
    We need funding
    We need resources
    We need ALL CHILDREN
    We need Support
We need qualified leaders that understand what it is like to teach(HAVE BEEN A TEACHER)

    WE NEED HELP!!!!!!!

@Adira: Who are these people?!?! Or are they all paid off?! Is Trump holding their family hostage or something?!

@FaithFertility: I can't imagine how teachers across the nation feel! You already have to fight for so much and it's such an "invisible" and under appreciated job!
