We are doing some improvements to out home and one of them is going to be painting our exterior and replacing our front door. What color is your door? What about the color of your house?

Here's a portion of the front of the house. I really want to paint a different color. Everyone that has this color of brick in our development has this same creamy yellowish paint. You can't see the front door well but it's currently a rusty red color and I think it doesn't go at all. The tree is large but has been trimmed and doesn't block the house as much.

I'm no help because our rental is about that color (door is white.) From what I can see you have a beautiful home! Good luck!

Does your HOA have a list of approved paints? That may be a place to start.

@2littlepumpkins: We don't have an HOA, so I don't have any limits. Not that I'm trying to do anything crazy. Thank you.

@MamaG: oh nice! I'm sure you'll end up with more useful answers here.

I think I would probably paint the garage (and likely front) doors a hunter green and leave the siding a similar color, but maybe a slightly darker tan. Kind of keeps it in the earth tones while differentiating colors a little bit?

FWIW, red is supposed to be the most welcoming color if you are selling a home. I've always loved the look of eggplant, but a "purple" door is a hard sell for my DH! Just choose a paint (and primer!) that won't chip easily. I painted our door a deep wine color, and it chipped in one spot to the brown beneath which drove me crazy, but no one else could see it! I used to live on Cape Cod, where all the houses are gray cedar shingles, so colorful doors were a big thing: coral, yellow, red, bright blue, green. If you choose a "crazy" color, it really helps if you can match/compliment it with shutters, a bench, adirondack chairs or planters. Also, if you have a favorite color of flowers, why not pick a color that compliments them or makes them stand out (ie: dark blue door for lavender flowers)?
As for paint colors, I always find brick a challenge to match. I would recommend finding a minor color that's in the brickwork and pulling that out. I think there are websites that will allow you to upload a photo and test out paint colors

I like the idea of a light teal color (gray teal, similar to the color of the Hellobee website).

@winniebee: yes! left my pic the same so people will "recognize me"

@BUNBUN: We are actually replacing the door. It has two windows in it that we don't like. I was actually considering a black door, because I typically have something hanging on the door, so it would provide a nice neutral backdrop. But I was worried, since the entry way is already sort of cave-ish. The front of our house faces south, so it doesn't get great daylight to the entry.

@peachykeen: In the dark green garage door scenario, I assume you'd leave the trim around the doors the same as the siding?

We have a darker brown brick house and are painting the door and window trim (no shutters) matte black. It is a modern house so I want simple- if it were older or more traditional, I would do a red or green door with black window trim and shutters.

I would do white trim, black garage doors, and a bright pop of color for the front door. You could do a color that you like a bright turquoise would be nice or green or yellow

@MamaG: I think you could leave the siding and garage doors as is and just go with a softer teal for the door as a pop of color!

@MamaG: If you leave the siding as-is, I think I'd paint the garage door trim the dark green as well. If you paint the siding a darker tan, I think you could do the garage door trim that color too.

@winniebee: I was thinking the same. Teal would be a really nice accent.
A brighter teal would be a bit bold, but I think it would look great!

For the front door, would you consider getting a wood door with a stain instead?
I like in a very 1970s neighborhood and a lot of the houses are similar drab colors. By far my favorite door in our cul de sac is one that's a nice rich, not too dark, not too light, wood.
This is similar in color, but the style matches the architecture more. http://www.copygeneralusa.com/images/www.doorsstyles.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Craftsman_Entry.119230640.jpg

@MaryM: I would absolutely love to have a nice craftsman door, it just doesn't feel like it fits the house.

@SugarplumsMom: @winniebee: I love it, but I just wonder if I would grow tired of it? I guess it could always be repainted. I think my DH is going to be more likely to go for an expected color like red or navy.
pomelo / 5129 posts
@MamaG: Yeah, the style wouldn't go with our house either, but I think the wood color is really pretty on a variety of houses (if you get it in a style that goes with your home)

@MamaG: I think you just motivated me to paint my front door I'm really liking the top right door in this picture. But I'm not convinced it matches my house
Eta: Someone commented that the color is Reflecting Pool by Sherwin Williams

We aren't done yet. Gutters will go up this week and I still need to pick a new door and color for the entry. We love it. It's a pretty big change.
