I'm sure this video is going to offend a lot of people, but I sort of love it

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't find cursing offensive. lol & that's coming from a very very sheltered & Christian upbringing! It was a cute video though & I hope those girls truly are (or at least become) that passionate about their rights & the rights of others.

The F word doesn't bother me when used occasionally but I don't like it for the sake of shock value which this video obviously is using it for. I just couldn't listen to it. I guess I would have preferred to hear the girls speak eloquently on the topic instead of resorting to base words.

honestly, i swear like a sailor but for some reason little kids using the word SO flippantly really put me off! i like the overall message of the video but it kinda made my stomach turn. i don't think the swearing was really necessary to convey the point, i guess. BUT it is getting talked about a lot and it's probably more to do with the shock value of the swearing than anything else. i just can't help but think about these girls using these words in their every day lives after participating in the making of this video. call me old fashioned but i don't love it coming outta the mouths of little ones!

I understand the concept, but I couldn't even finish watching it. I really think the (very important!) message could have been brought to attention in a much better way.
But that's just my opinion!!

Do not like at all. Using little kids this way is not cool. There is no way these girls know what they are saying. The video is done in really, really poor taste.

I don't find swearing (or the video) offensive and it wasn't all that shocking to me, but it just didn't do it for me and I don't see it being effective in getting the message across.

Cursing doesn't bother me. I don't curse like a sailor but do occasionally. It didn't bother me hearing the girls curse and I liked what they were saying--the part that bothered me was the overly sassy/attitude thing. That was a bit much, but all in all, I think this was a good video and will get people talking.
I disagree that these girls don't know what they were saying. I'm sure some of the younger ones may not know and the ones who do know might not say it in the same way--but believe me they know. We work with girls as young as 9 and they may not have the vocabulary but they know about sexism and how women aren't treated equally.

I dislike adults using children for any sort of political messaging. It reeks of brainwashing to me.
Feel free to discuss the merits of issues with children, but don't feed them a script and tell them to repeat it. That's simply insulting to their intelligence.

I think it sends a message loud and clear. And the fact that that a lot of people aren't getting it proves the point. People should be more outraged at the inequality than at kids (who are obviously actors) cussing. But they are not.
@honeybear: I don't see gender equality as a political.
ETA: So the clip is an ad for a t-shirt company. As much as I agree with the message, I don't really like that they are using it to sell merchandise. I might just make my own t-shirt that says "Girls just want to have FUN -damental rights"

@TemperanceBrennan: agreed, I didn't see this as political either, it's gender equality. Also, I'm sure these child actors were paid well for appearing in this commercial. Just like the child actors who appear in plenty of commercials, TV shows, and films that have them doing things that aren't age appropriate. Reading a script does not equal brainwashing.
Of course I understand why lots of people have problems with them cursing...shock value to call attention to inequality. I'm just afraid that those of us who like the commercial are already in the know on these issues and that this might be preaching to the choir. To bring new people to work/fight on these issues might take something less shocking.

@TemperanceBrennan: @mrsjazz: It clearly is political. President Obama uses the first fact they mention regularly:
I think we all agree that fairness is a good thing--for everybody.
The reason I find this video and other similar uses of children to be so odious is that they betray the condescending attitudes of the adults who are responsible for it. Kids (and most adults) are much smarter than the makers of stunts like this give them credit for. Children are rational creatures who can understand logic and who have the capacity to think through tough issues for themselves.
Furthermore, I find the way in which these children were taught to speak to be problematic. Perhaps we can overlook the f-word, but would you tolerate anyone--male or female, adult or child--speaking to you in the tone and manner that they've been taught to use? Think about the take-away for these kids and everyone who sees it: What sort of model have they been given for how to conduct public discourse on a topic of importance to them? Is it the model we want them to use in the future?

@honeybear: I understand that the 77 cent figure is a simplified overview of wages of men and women, but no one claims there is no wage gap. EVERYONE should work to reduce the gap. That is not political.
This ad is for adults (to sell t-shirts). The way it is filmed and the way the actors are talking is for specific emphasis. No one is pointing to this saying "this is how we should model social interactions." It's meant to be provocative. It worked.

@TemperanceBrennan: As I've explained, my problem with the video is not that it is provocative, but that it is exploitative. And exploitation is, ironically, what the script says this group is against.
pear / 1998 posts
@honeybear: I think the group is exploiting the women's equality cause in order to sell t-shirts, but I disagree that the ad is exploiting children, but to each their own.

I laughed at the ad. I cant help it because I think little kids saying fuck is funny. Overall, I liked the ad. I liked the message. I thought the boy at the end was great.
I hated that they were selling t-shirts though and I wish they had said what charities they were supporting.

I don't think words, in and of themselves, are offensive or "bad". I don't think having a large vocabulary that includes words like these is less "eloquent". I think words like inequality should make us more upset than words like fuck.
Do I use these words in every sentence like this video? No, not at all. But not every sentence I speak is intended for shock value. The entire point if this video was to shock people and make them pay attention to some very serious and real issues that are being ignored. I'd say these words served their purpose very well and accomplished their goal.
These children were no more exploited than children in a dog food commercial. This is not a political message, this is a human message. Words are just words - the power we give them is up to us.
