We are not big travelers but considering bringing the kids to my husband's conference in Milwaukee!
My kids will be 3 and 1.
On vacations we like: nature, learning about history/cultures.. We don't like: shopping..
We live in the Bay Area in California. Wondering if it'll be better to save our $$ and use it to vacation nearby because there's so much to do in ca. But we also want to extend our horizons and learn to explore..

I'm originally from the Milwaukee area. The weather will be great that time of year. There is so much to do along the lake front.

Hey!! I live in Milwaukee! There are so many things to do that time of year! There are always tons of festivals going on downtown, you will have to check the exact dates. But otherwise, just walking down on the lakefront, delicious coffee shops along with bike rentals, paddle boats, and kite rentals too!!
There's an awesome children's museum, called Betty Brinns, also if your LO's are a tad older, Discovery World would also be a super fun place!

This is my hood! There will be lots of festivals that are awesome. The Milwaukee public museum is great for kids as well as Betty brinn children's museum. There's a. zoo if you're into that. Discovery world on the lakefront has an aquarium and a bunch of cool science exhibits for the kids to explore. We also have some nice nature centers in the area, as well as a lot of local beaches and trails to explore. Let me know if you have specific questions

@MamaG: @MrsBrewer: @gotkimchi: thanks! We're still debating if we will do it or not but now I know we could enjoy the lake and hiking and downtown. Are there pretty kid-friendly hikes ?
The only thing is it'll be me and the kids for the day time and evenings with my husband. We only get one full day with my husband and we were thinking we would possibly use that day to drive to chicago? Have no idea what the traffic is like.

@mrs.kiwi: it's about a 1.5-2 hour drive. Traffic can be heavy, but usually isn't terrible depending on your timing

@mrs.kiwi: you could also look at taking a train down. The Metra is a very inexpensive and easy way to get to downtown Chicago. I grew up south of Milwaukee, so I always got on in Kenosha, but it seems like there might be train stations in the Milwaukee area as well. The last time I took the Metra is was $5/adult and I think kids traveled for free (on the weekends at least). It's been a few years though!
It's a commuter train, so it is not fancy, but it makes getting to Chicago really easy. There are also more expensive options like Amtrack.
