What's your favorite holiday bread? I want to do some baking today but I'm not sure what to make.
I did find a yummy recipe for red bean buns, though! E really likes korean breads so she might like those.

Like a quick bread? I Ike cranberry bread (the skinnytaste banana cranberry bread came out really yummy). Or do you mean a real bread like sourdough or something?

Nah, I'm thinking a real bread! I have fresh yeast in my house for once! I've done a few quick breads lately--banana, lemon poppyseed....

@blackbird: hmm, I have never heard of holiday bread (just quick breads)
What are some other ones you make?
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@blackbird: wow ambitious! I used to do "no knead" bread sometimes, but then I had a baby and lost the ambition. I did make a really yummy fruit and nut bread that was so good with cheese. But it takes a long time to let the yeast sit and stuff.
This is the recipe if you are interested http://www.thekitchn.com/a-cheese-worthy-161998
I used whatever dried fruits and nuts that I had.

@Mamaof2: Well i was just thinking of something special for the holidays. Friends of mine make potivica, which I thought about...but i'm not a HUGE nut fan.
@Foodnerd81: Well, i'll be home most of the day with a sick kid, so letting something proof in the bathroom for a few hours, then coming back to it later isn't much work for me, LOL. I do have dates at home but no dried fruit...and i'm saving the dates to make a sticky toffee pudding on Christmas Eve

I'm making Martha Stewart herb and cheese bread from the Dec issue. It's her basic buttery yeast dough with parsley, thyme and parmesan.

I have one with sweet potato. It's yummy. Want me to wall it?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Mrs. Twine: It sounds good, but I don't have any sweet potato at home and i REFUSE to go to the zoo, aka the grocery store, today, HAHA!
I'm not very helpful today, LOL.

@blackbird: Eh, you are allowed. I went yesterday and it made me punchy. I discovered I don't really like people.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Mrs. Twine: hahaha thank you for the offer, though! I went to the store probably last Friday and it just put me in the worst mood. Hoping to avoid until Dec 26, if i can

@blackbird: I can't imagine if I lived somewhere that was well-populated to begin with-- yesterday was just the after church crowd, but man! Usually I go shopping during the week when it's nice and quiet. I forget about the whole crazy holiday thing because I'm usually off in my own hazy mental world anyway, and then get shocked into awareness when there are hundreds of people crowding and acting crazy. And whoever said the holiday spirit was kindness or generosity or whatever can bite me, because around here the holiday spirit is asshole.

@Mrs. Twine: LOL IT IS!!! When we went black friday shopping, for example, we had this lady blatantly cut in front of us. I called her out on it and she just STARED at us. People are such twats around the holidays sometimes. And obviously I'm feeding off that grouchiness. I'm just going to stay home, sip tea and munch cookies, thankyouverymuch.

@blackbird: I just made multiple loaves of povitica yesterday for the first time - not as hard as I imagined! I made an apple cinnamon one without nuts and then a chocolate walnut one (but the nuts are ground so fine you can't really tell).

@Chaosmaven: Oh, apple cinnamon sounds amazing!!! I don't have apples, but i DO have loads of cinnamon.

@blackbird: I'd never seen povatica before. It looks like babka. What's the difference between the two?
grapefruit / 4988 posts
DH sometimes makes a cinnamon and sugar babka for holidays. It is sort of labor intensive but delicious. MIL often requests them at Christmas.

@Chaosmaven: Is povitica and potica the same thing? We're solvenian so we always have it at easter, although we buy it now because the process is so labor intensive. ETA: Yep it is!

I love the buttery doughs, for broiche, zopf or challah this time of year.

And http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/classic-challah-recipe the bread only took about 30 min total tho!

@blackbird: ALL THE BREAD.
Well - I saw your red bean bread on IG, and it looked pretty yummy. I've always wanted to make cinnamon-raisin bread. DH makes a pretty killer challah, too.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: I was thinking about how good the bean bread would be if you used cinnamon roll filling!!!
E's been sick and I am so tired of watching Mickey LOL so...yeast breads it is

We make buttermilk stolens. They are my absolute favorite. We are still trying to figure out how to do it gluten free.

@MrsRcCar: I've never made stolen, but was going to recommend it as a baking challenge! I love it so much.

@Happygal: I could send you our families recipe. We make them the same way my great-great-great grandma did.
pomelo / 5000 posts
@MrsRcCar: Please do! I would love that. I've bought it in the grocery stores and it's not so good. There's one bakery in town that does an awesome job, but it comes with a high price tag.
