Last year we did coloring books which were a huge hit for the kids on the drive home from the party. I want to do something different this year but I don't want to just give junk. What are your favorite party favors?

Anything but the little crap that ends up in the trash the next day.

Bubbles or most stuff found in the Target $1 aisle is good. We're doing Hot Wheels cars for our baby's first birthday since they're his favorite to play with.

Fun bandaids or stickers (basically, things that my LO is obsessed with).
pomegranate / 3392 posts
Bubbles, stickers, play doh, little snacks, or anything else that gets consumed and doesn't add to clutter.

Bubbles, bath paint, stickers - basically anything that is consumable and will be used up on a few days and not little plastic junk that clutters up my house.

Chalk or stickers would be a big hit right now...I'd get a big box of chalk, split it up and put it in a little glassine bag with a ribbon.

This year we handed a goodie bag with a mini notepad, marker, stickers, temporary tattoo, glow in the dark dinosaurs, and a stamp. I also added a dinosaur themed book.

Bubbles, coloring books, markers, sidewalk chalk.

My kids really like balloons, or something to wear at the party (butterfly wings, super hero capes, masks, crowns, leis, grass skirts.....). I've given books, which were a hit, and while we haven't received it, I know they'd love chalk (and as a mom, I'd like that it goes away/gets used up).

At the last party we were at we got a $5 gift card to a local frozen yogurt place, which I thought was a great idea.

Balloons, small snacks, playdoh....anything that isn't plastic basically.

We had little star-shaped sunglasses in ours that were a huge hit! I've seen daycare kids wearing theirs to school since our party they're from party city and were super cheap (impulse buy when I was buying plastic ware)

We've had some cool party favors lately - one was a dinosaur tail and one was an inflatable stick pony. Both were from Oriental Trading.

@BabyBoecksMom: I've never seen those tails before - they're hilarious! Love them!

We got small terra cotta pots for 1.00 each. The kids painted them at the party (but you could skip this!) and before they left shoveled a little dirt and planted some zinnia seeds. The actual planting took like 30 seconds so it was an easy activity to do on the way out the door. People seemed to like them and the kids enjoyed it!

DD got a cute animal umbrella at a party and she's been obsessed with it.

I prefer useful things like snacks, cups, straws, etc. we just had Dd1's 4th at the zoo and we have out foam animal masks, animal crackers and animal stamps. All big hits with the kids (they were playing with them at the party). The zoo also included a free admission for future, a sticker and this tiny animal parachute toy.

We did a metal themed lunch box filled with a unicorn necklace, fancy painted cookie, themed books and colored hair braid clip ons.
Really depends on the age and theme though.
We always give away the balloon decorations on the way out though.

Small snacks. DS was at a party last week and they got a bag with candy/treats and one cheapie plastic toy that is already lost. I honestly don't mind the treats because it gets put away right away and he only gets one piece at a time as a special treat. We never buy candy, so it's definitely special around here.

I gotta say....I hate bubbles and stickers. Bubbles usually end up in frustration because she can't reach in a get the wand herself and stickers end up everywhere.
Snacks, cups, books....useful stuff

great thread! i'm trying to think of ideas for my son's bday coming up.
this bakery around here makes cookies on a string (sugar cookies threaded with a ribbon - to make a cookie necklace). somehow wearing/eating a cookie necklace is pretty much the coolest thing ever. and one is enough! they would be pretty easy to make, i think.

Bubbles, balloons, stickers, chalk, little notebooks and crayons...
I will go against the grain and say I don't mind the cheap plastic crap. It entertains them for an hour and then I can chuck it out overnight when it has done its job.
I hate getting candy though. I let LO eat whatever she wants at the party, but don't really want to give her a bag of sugar at the end too.

For ds party this year I did
Chocolate (woops )
Stickers
Bubbles
Play doh
The little girls (sisters of the older friends, all under 1 year) got a board book and a head band.

@tysonja: what a great idea! I was going to give cookies as the favors but a cookie necklace sounds even better!

We usually give out books that relate to the theme of the party- trains, dinosaurs. Last year, we gave little construction hats and vests to the kids to wear at the party and then take home afterwards.
Our favorite favor to receive was sidewalk chalk. We are always running out of sidewalk chalk!
