Our situation was probably a little different but we knew she had MSPI and even after months of being on a very strict diet and not cheating, she was still having issues (blood in diapers). Then when we started introducing solids, she had a couple times where she threw up after eating eggs, and once where she broke out in what seemed to be hives all over her body after eating kiwi. We had to wait until she was a year old but our pediatrician referred us to the allergist and they tested her for allergies to every food that I had been avoiding (dairy, soy, peanuts, treenuts, corn) as well as eggs and kiwi, and I think maybe a few other common allergens.

We were extremely lucky because she came back clear for everything and at that point, we were able to re-introduce all the foods I'd eliminated with no problems. We never really figured out what caused the issues with the hives, but it also never recurred. We did eventually figure out that she had carsickness and that's what made her throw up a few times (oops).

@Boogs: Skin tests for all. I understand these are not definitive but it was good enough for us. We had friends whose son had a serious egg allergy and they did blood tests for him.

Edited to add: We also had an epi pen that we had gotten from the pediatrician since we had to wait several months for an appointment with the allergist. That made me feel a little better while we waited.

Edited again because I apparently didn't read your question (lol): She did great with the testing and it was really easy. She was 14 months at the time.

I wouldn't rule out seeing an allergist based solely on shots.

The test itself isn't pleasant (but I think they might do it on the back instead of arms for kids), but an allergist can be a HUGE help and they're more than just shots.

If your kid has "hayfever" like symptoms year round, it could be related things causing outbreaks. Knowing what foods are linked to what triggers (google oral allergy syndrome. I think pineapple and banana are linked to ragweed allergies?) can help minimize symptoms.

Also, the allergist I saw had sublingual drops available. They aren't FDA approved in the US yet, so I had to pay out of pocket, but I would have been charged a copay for each shot so it ended up being cheaper.

I wish my mother had had me tested when I was younger instead of having to suffer with swollen eyes and multiple sinus infections each year until I was in my 20s and got tested myself.

Feeling better makes a few shots totally worth it.

ETA: Just in case it wasn't clear, I haven't been found to have an "allergy" to fruits. I just know from airborne allergy tests that I'm allergic to a lot of things that have links to food that can cause "oral allergy syndrome." That's all I've seen an allergist for.

@Boogs: Definitely weird! If you don't want to go the whole allergy route, you could just avoid pineapple for now. Does he have the same reaction if it's in a drink or baked?

@LulaBee: I'd ask your pediatrician to refer you to an allergist for the egg. They can do a skin prick test to confirm it for you! Both my kids had their allergies confirmed before 9m.

@LulaBee: You won't know how severe the allergy is probably until 12+ months, when they do a blood test, but an allergist will do a skin prick test to at least confirm the allergy. And if your LO can eat baked egg, I would continue to give it to her! It may help her outgrow the allergy altogether.

@Boogs: I think often times pineapples can be pretty acidic, so it's possible that that's just irritating him, since he can have it in drinks (I assume mixed with other things that might bring the whole acidic level down). Still annoying!

Bumping this thread- anyone's LO with allergies have a tomato allergy?

We gave our egg allergic 9 month old lasagna last night- loved it, ate a ton- threw up all over herself and crib at 10:45. Could tomatoes be the culprit? She's typically been fine with pasta....
