Any suggestions for fun, portable games we can play as a family while on vacation? I'm looking for things with a minimal # of pieces to get lost in our hotel room (ha!) and of a packable size. Ideally I'd love things we can play on the plane, too, but I know that's a tall order!
Kids who will play are 6 and 4.5; we already have character-themed versions of Uno and Go Fish!

@Aria: ooo yes! I have spot it but has tucked it away when it was too hard. I bet it’d be perfect now. Do you alter the rules to Pass the pigs at all? I’m wondering if the constant tally is too much work to be fun for the girls, especially the four year old. But I personally love that game!
@wrkbrk: my kids are puzzle fiends, so I had some puzzles out, but realized that all I can fit on an airplane tray are the 12-24 pc ones you mentioned...and they regularly do 63-100 pieces...so I’m torn on whether the smaller ones are worth hauling. I do think the M&D ones are a GREAT idea!! and whoa, pick up sticks! I haven’t seen those in years!! But those would be fun, too, I may look for a set.

@PinkElephant: I play with my almost four year old and I just call out her score as she rolls and when she is happy with the number she stops and I write it down. Although usually she stops at 10 points because she likes to write the number herself and that’s one she can do. Haha. I don’t find it to be too much of an issue.

We got a paper and pencil version of battleship as a kids meal toy once, and its been a huge hit with DS. A quick google shows lots of PDFs of it online. You just draw out where your ships are and use a pencil to make marks instead of the pegs. You could easily print a bunch and no pieces to lose!

DS loves Rush Hour by ThinkFun and dominoes. Also Rubik's cube, but I had to print instructions off the internet before we could get anywhere with it

@Mama Bird: I second rush hour. DS is 5 and loves it. We can play together or he can do it alone.
I’d bring a regular deck of cards so you can play any of the games with them. The three we play the most are go fish, crazy eights & war.
Snakes and ladders would be another good one.

@Mama Bird: if we brought a Rubik's Cube, I seriously would not be able to rest until it was back in order, haha! Those things drive me craaaaaazy!
@JennyPenny: Thanks! I don't know if they'd love Battleship, but printable games is an awesome idea I hadn't thought of - maybe I can do some tic-tac-toe or something.

Shopping List game by Orchard Toys it’s on amazon. It’s like a memory game and bingo combined. You have to fill your shopping cart with items on your list. The items are face down tiles and you have to try and remember where the ones you need are at.
