Every year, I buy one type of item and that becomes my standard birthday party gift. Last year, it was a Spot It Alphabet card game and a wooden cheese puzzle, about $20 in total.
This year, I came across this but I am not sure if it's weird or not. My requirement is that it must work for boys or girls and not be character driven. The kids are 4 turning 5 and in a preK program together.

Why do you think it's weird? It's definitely not a mainstream run of the mill toy and it looks challenging, but weird? I think it would be a fine gift!

I had gotten that for my nephews around age 7-8. I dont think they ended up playing with it too much and it was kinda hard. This one looks like its geared towards a younger group (Rookie) but it takes a big amount of determination and patience. I dont think my 4 almost 5 would use it much.

Definitely not weird...it looks to me like it could be a little difficult for that age group, but I'm not sure because my kids are younger than that....puzzles of any sort are a great gift!

@gracecat: I am not sure if the parents would look at it and think it was a silly thing, like what the heck can a kid do with that? On the website, they have age recommendations and when i searched for age 5, this was on the list.
I try to get gifts that the family can play together.

I think it would be too challenging for a 4& 5 year old.
ETA: I don't think it's a weird gift at all. I'm a big fan of educational toys.

I would love for LO to get a gift that gave her a challenge. But I don't know enough about the age group to know if they could do it. Could you buy one for G and see how he does with it and go from there?

My LO just turned 4, and I think she'd get frustrated quickly and give up. She doesn't have a great attention span though.

This might be an option - TROUBLE. We played it growing up and it is my Mom's favorite game still at 69. We recently got it for C and she enjoys it as well. She's not fully got the strategy part of it yet, but has fun. It's fairly cheap as well.

As a parent, I would love my child to get a gift like that! I prefer gifts that a child can grow with, and get a lot out of. That even looks like a good toy for car rides - they're sitting down and can focus on it.

I don't think it's weird, but I do think it will be too difficult. The box says 8+ and it looks pretty complicated for a kindergartner.

BEST GIFT EVER!!!!!!! MY nephew got one for his 4th birthday and is obsessed. It has been circulating through my friends as a bday gift and everyone loves it. I gave it to a 4 year old who loves it and his parents steal it at night to play. We ended up buying 1 for my dad for his birthday.

I Don't think it's weird at all, but I think my 6 year old precocious niece would get frustrated with it. For the last few years I've been getting her art kits for her bday-- something that doesn't take up too much space and helps her craft something. The company Seedling makes nice kits

@looch: DH has two of these (adult level!) and really likes them. He would be thrilled if someone gifted our LO this. I like unique gifts. It's not weird at all.

I love the Thinkfun games. Rush Hour was always a favorite when I taught 2nd grade. They have a Rush Hour Jr. for ages 5+. My LOs are 1 and 3 so we don't have it at home yet, but anytime I have given it as a gift it's been a hit. They also have tons of other logic/brain teaser games
