Girl variations on the name Eliot

Dh and I have talked about naming our next child* after his father who just passed away a couple months ago: his name was Eliot. Boy name choices then are pretty obvious, but for girls it gets a little trickier!

One caveat--lo's name is Rosalie, and some of the options might sound a little too similar out loud for us to actually use...

What do you all think? Or do you have better ideas for me?

*with lo we picked her name as well as a boy name welllll before conception so I'm def putting the cart before the horse here again!

I like Elliott for a girl (double T) but I think with a very feminine sister Rosalie, something like Eleanor sounds much better (maybe NN Nora)?

@T.H.O.U.: I LOOOOOVE Norah--it was my top choice name before a family friend used Nora. My only hesitation with Eleanor is that a different close friend (my moh actually) once told me it was her top choice name for a girl, so I'd feel like I was stealing it, haha. Also I'm a historian so people would assume it's after Roosevelt

I like Elliot for a girl but I agree that I don't know if I would pair it with your current daughters name. Eloise is also super cute but has a similar feel to Rosalie. What about Elle?

I love the name Elliott for a girl, NN Ellie. I love the name Elodie as well (nn Ellie) it was always top of my list but DH vetoed both girls.

I know I'm in the minority since it's gotten quite common, but Elliot reads so masculine to me. It's surprises me like a girl named Robert or something! I love Eleanor and Eloise and quite like Elodie.

@nana87: as far as Jules, what about Jewel? I know a little girl named Jewel. Maybe it's too reminiscent of the singer, but cute nonetheless. You could do Julia or Jewel as a middle name.

I would go with Ella or Ellie or Elodie

I do think Elliott is fine for a girl and I grew up with a friend who was a girl named this but I don't think it goes well with Rosalie

I am more of a fan of just using the name as opposed to using something that sounds like it. So my vote is to call her Elliott or use it as a middle name.

My thoughts before reading the poll options were Eleanor or Eloise, both of which could be nicknamed Ellie.

You could also consider Elizabeth since it's another Eli- prefix.

I don't think Eliott goes with Rosalie. My daughter is also Rosalie. I have Eleanor picked out as a name for a possible second daughter. I think they go great together.

I would do a middle name Eliott. I just feel like if you're naming after someone, I'd want to use the actual name.

I love Elliott on its own for a girl, Lottie is the cutest nickname ever (I'd love to have a Lottie myself!).

I also love Elodie.

Elsie is a cute one too!

(Love Eloise but I think it sounds too tongue twistery with Rosalie)

my daughter is named Elliott. Our nicknames for her are Ellie, Elle, and Elles. I may be biased but I think Elliott is an awesome and versatile name.

thanks again, everyone! this has been really interesting (and a fun distraction from a cp...). I hadn't thought of girl-Elliott not fitting with the very feminine name Rosalie, so that definitely makes me lean towards some of the other names...I also thought of Juliet since posting this, since the first syllable would pull from Jules and the last from -ot, but the names together, though both very feminine, might be too Shakespearian, haha

@MrsSRS: we're using my maiden name as a middle, but I do love Eleanor Jules!

@mrsjd: one of my good friends as a kid was an Ellen so I can't not associate it with her, haha

@erinbaderin: dh suggested Ellie too, but I'd rather use it as a nn than a full name

@lawbee11: @shortcake: I really like Eliza too but dh has a bad association with it apparently and vetoed

@Eko: @JerricaBenton: the convention in our family is actually to change the name a little, both dh and my names are slightly changed versions of relatives who had passed away before we were born (it's Jewish tradition to honor loved ones who've passed). so we'd be following this pattern. lo's name is also a play on 3 different people's names.

@mamimami: my name is Anna so I think Eliana is a little too close, though very sweet!

@Mrs. Pickle: I do really love Eleanor, and you're right, it goes with Rosalie really well! Love your name choices

@ElbieKay: I really like Elizabeth though maybe not as much as some of the others...but it's another one to think about!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I think we'd go with Eloise, based on dh's initial reaction, except for the tongue twister aspect! Lottie is a really sweet nn idea too.

I think if it's tradition to change up the name you've got some great options above!

I don't know if I would do Elliott (although the I do love it!) in case it would upset family having the name said all the time? Maybe it wouldn't! But my friend wanted to use her brothers (he passed when he was young) as her sons middle and her mom said not to use the name anywhere, it would be too hard for her.

So I think changing it so it's a bit more feminine to go with Rosalie is a great option

@Mrs. Champagne: that's a really good point about sensitivity and using the exact name, and mil can be unpredictable in her reactions. plus, dh is (understandably) really upset that his father won't meet another grandchild even though likes the idea of honoring his name. usually it's been a lot longer between the relative passing and the name being used (for example, both dh and I were named after people who had passed away ~20 years before we were born) so it might be really raw if it's within the same year-ish.

@nana87: I think a similar name without being the exact name is the way to go then!

My son is named after DHs grandpa but he passed away over 30 years ago so everyone loved it

@nana87: If it's tradition in your family to reuse names then my vote is for Ayelet and Eleanor. I think Ayelet is super cute and a little more original - and seems closer to Elliott than Eleanor. But Eleanor is one of my top favorite names too. I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices.

What about Eliana? I've heard it a few times and always thought it was pretty, but I just looked it up and it's apparently Hebrew and means "God has answered" - seems like a nice sentiment for the situation
