Last year I bought several Stomp Rockets to give as birthday gifts for my daughter's friends, when they were all turning 3, an idea I got on the boards here.

At 4 my daughter was generally able to tell me what her classmates were into (and be correct), so I tried to go with that.
If you're looking for an "across the board" sort of gift that works regardless of interests or gender, I really like board games. Shelby's Snack Shack is a favorite in our house, along with Pengoloo (but my DDs like dogs & penguins). We just got Yeti In My Spaghetti from a classmate, and that's a fun and fast game that both my 3 and 5 year old can play.

I second games: Uno, Richard Scary's Busytown game, Hungry Hungry Hippos (if there is no younger sibling).
I've also purchased jewelry kits from Melissa and Doug for the girls.

The My First Garden kit from Miracle Gro is really cute. My daughter got it and loved it. They paint the outside and then plant seeds for a few veggies. It's only $15 at Target.

Costumes, lego sets, crafting sets. I don't have one specific go-to but I tend to rotate between those depending on the child.

@PinkElephant: I know my daughter could tell me more specifics but sometimes I just want to streamline and take the thought out of it- as terrible as that sounds! But to be fair I put No Gifts on her bday invite so other parents don't have to worry about it.

I like to gift art supplies or craft kits. I've also given games, like Spot It. Another favorite is those Story Cards and Story Cubes.

I like to do themes--for summer birthdays outdoor toys! Chalk sets, pool toys, cute hats, etc.
Lately I have been doing games though--zingo sight words is a great 4 year old game!

Four year old was also the start of early reader books. It was when she really wanted to transition into longer story books and books she can start to learn to read!

Games. Age 4 game of the year was Sequence for Kids. 4 year olds can play it well and the adults enjoy it, too.

We love receiving open-ended art supplies/kits. I think I'd love if LO received a few more advanced puzzles and board games this year.
