I'm rocking some serious gray and brown roots right now? I usually use loreil high lift Carmel browns or touch ups at home. I'm 7 weeks pregnant. What are your thoughts on hair color in the first trimester? Would you? Are they all created equal?

My doctor recommended avoiding any hair coloring until after 13 weeks, and only in a well ventilated room.
I got highlights done at a salon twice throughout this entire pregnancy. It does smell!

I got my hair done in a salon at 4, 20, and 30 weeks pregnant. Admittedly I didn't put a ton of thought into it

My RE paper work says it's a no no for the first trimester
ETA: I have super gray hair & my plan was to color right before O, then if KU, use pure henna dye to touch up my roots. Being super gray would stress me out. You could also look into having it done at an aveda salon, their products usually have less chemicals.

I always thought that was old school advice and we don't need to be so strict. I would get my hair done no problem while pregnant.
ETA. Although I cannot recall if I had asked my doc because I was not needing hair colour at the time.

My doctor and midwife said it was fine to color my hair, just don't sit around for hours and hours with it on your scalp. I dyed my hair at about 8 weeks.

I had no problem coloring my hair during the first trimester (and beyond). I would do it in a well ventilated area, which frankly, I would do anyway!

my best friend had hers done at about 5-6 weeks... she asked her doctor if it was okay and he didn't have a problem with it. i also asked my hairdresser and she said lots of people do, it's personal preference. i get the whole 'being on the safe side' thing but i probably would get my hair done while pg. that's just me though!

@yoursilverlining: Completely agree with this.
I colored mine at 12 weeks - wasn't by design, just happened to be that way.
I always figured it was an antiquated recommendation from when they used different kind of hair dyes (like straight up bleach). And when you think about it, hair stylists have perfectly healthy babies and they don't stop working during their pregnancy.
ETA: I had HG and already felt pretty disgusting throughout my pregnancy. I don't think I could handle being a complete vomit fest and roots

I've had mine coloured throughout my pregnancy including my first trimester. I did switch from bleach to a L'Oreal bleach alternative after discussing with my hairdresser, it honestly made no difference to the colour & made me feel a little better.

Both my doctor and hair stylist(I know, he's no doctor) said hair coloring was fine while pregnant. I just waited for 12+ weeks, because that's when it happened I needed it done.

I'm risk averse so i avoided colouring my hair in the first trimester. I ended up using a non-ammonia hair dye which still stunk when i was around 17 weeks. I have really bad white hairs, so i totally feel your pain.
If you really have to, i'd use one of the more temporary hair dye solutions.

@BakerBee: I don't that it's totally antiquated. I like to know risks and then choose. There are plenty of studies showing an increase on bladder cancer in hair colorists, not sure if they've followed the offspring of colorists. Colorists would certainly have so much more exposure long term, but I think that does demonstrate that there is some risk to consider. For many, they may decide the stress of gray outweighs the small risk from color exposure, but still I think it's reasonable to warn women of some level of risk.

I got highlights at 6 weeks! My RE didn't seem to think a thing of it.

Thanks everyone! I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do. I'm leaning towards waiting till 12 weeks just because I'm the kind of insane person who would blame myself if anything happened even though I know it would most likely be unrelated. We shall see.

I did at 5 and 12 weeks at a salon, just foils though so the dye isn't touching/ soaking in to my scalp.

I think I ended up getting my hair done at around 12-13 weeks. I would have gotten it done sooner if I had needed to. I wasn't worried about it.

I waited until the 2nd tri. My doc said she preferred I just do an all over color & not the blond highlights that take forever on my brown hair!
