I would definitely do this, but we use cable for our internet. Looking into getting DSL...
Have you "cut the cord" and cancelled cable?

Yes, and I totally miss it! We have Netflix, and can stream a lot of shows through their network websites, but I definitely miss just channel surfing.

Yes. I haven't had cable in nearly 5 years and don't miss it. We have DSL and watch hulu plus through our wii, so most shows are via our tv. We pay $39/month for internet and $8/month for hulu plus, so our entertainment bills are only $47. Not bad. Cable would definitley cost more than that, and we'd still have to pay for internet.

we've never had it! We just have netflix. sometimes I miss it but I watch so much tv via netflix or hulu that it would be bad if we got cable in addition :-P

Yup! We have no cable & disconnected our antena. We also got rid of Internet for almost a year & a half but recently got a mobile hotspot. We have unlimited data on our phones and would connect our phones to the tv to stream Netflix. We both have Internet access at work & we can just go one block over and use free wifi, but for now we want the hotspot to have it easily at home too. We try to limit our media/screen exposure, I am weaker than DH regarding screen time though! But I have more free time to fill.

Yup!! We have been without for a few years now. We got it temporarily for 3 months in between, but since we just had the "promotion price" they jacked it back up so we cancelled. We still go through them for internet though and it's only $35 a month which is affordable.

Ugh... it's automatically included in our monthly HOA fees so there is nothing much I can do. You can't ask to have it taken out.

We only have super basic cable (because its the same price as going without, since we have internet). We use Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime instant streaming. Also, I have access to my parents' xfinity account, so I can watch stuff via the computer connected to the tv. Don't miss cable at all!

My sisters did. They both really missed it. They watched a lot of friends DVDs.

We haven't had cable tv for 4 years. I think we'd both enjoy having it but we aren't home enough and we can't see spending the money.

We didn't have it for the first year and a half of marriage. We got it when we bought our house, but are canceling it when we get back from Christmas travels.
GOLD / nectarine / 2022 posts
We are doing it when I go back to work!!
But we will have Netflix & HuluPlus..... I just wish I could get Bravo!!

I watch so much TV... I don't think I could ever cancel cable. My husband wants us to scale back though and get rid of our premium channels, but after watching the season finale of Homeland, I don't think I could stand not being able to watch it next season!!

Yep, about 2 years ago. We have a digital antenna for local channels/surfing.,and we have Netflix streaming and 3 discs st a time. It is plenty enough entertainment :)

Basic cable is included with our HOA but I couldn't do it. I love TV to much!!

We have cable Internet but not TV. Got rid of it in 2006 :)
GOLD / pear / 1775 posts
Yup and it's been glorious! We have an hd antenna that gets about 40 channels and we use clear for Internet. Clear is pretty slow so I wouldnt recommend it, but the only other option was Verizon dsl with a $250 activation fee since our phone line is damaged.

Yup cut the cord from Directv about last summer. I miss having DVR but I love not paying for cable. We have some cheaper alternatives like red box.

No cable here. We watch our shows online. I love it because I don't watch random tv just because I'm bored.

@Adira: I read on the boards that Homeland Season 3 doesn't start until December next year?
GOLD / nectarine / 2276 posts
Yep, we cancelled it about 2 years ago. With Hulu plus and Netflix we don't miss much!
GOLD / grapefruit / 4932 posts
@mrbee: Yeah, that's probably true, but I also have Spartacus (Cinemax) starting in January, and then Game of Thrones (HBO) starting in April... so I really don't want to get rid of my cable package until the summer... and then it'll almost be time for Homeland to start up again!

No - that's definitely not for us. We have our shows we like to watch and my husband would miss all his sports too. I actually can't believe that canceling cable has become such a 'thing!' More power to you if you don't miss it but I know I would.

we went a month without it when we moved & I didn't miss it that much. I watched all my shows online.
DH missed it though so now we have it again.

TV is definitely my guilty pleasure. Since having the baby, I pretty much sit on the couch and nurse or sleep all day - I'd die without cable.
GOLD / pear / 1658 posts
Ugh, I LOVE my TV, yet we're thinking about cutting it once we move...we'll see how it goes...
GOLD / cantaloupe / 5087 posts
We havent had any type of TV in about a year and a half. :) We watch the few shows we care to online.
GOLD / nectarine / 2369 posts
Never had cable TV so I don't miss it. I grew up watching just the basic channels but always so jealous of my friends who watched cartoons on Nickelodeon. Always thought that cable would be one of those must have things as an adult, but I have been happy without out. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime videos that keep us entertained. I also love watching PBS shows online.

We'll never cut the cable-cord; too many great shows on and I don't have the patience to wait until they go to DVD. If we could get real-time HBO without cable then I would think about cancelling; until then, nope.

We're locked in a 2 year contract with Dish. I wish there were an option similar to Verizon's friends and family or my circle where you can pick 10 numbers and not get charged minutes. I envision it would work something like this: pay a set monthly fee and get to pick 10 channels. There could be an option for 15 or 20 channels too. Anybody here work for a cable company and care to get the ball rolling on this?
