I'm debating trying this. I wanna take about 4 inches off. It's about 3/4 down my back right now. Any tips for DIY?

I cut/trim my bangs all the time. I've sort of trimmed the ends of my hair before, but never an actual haircut.

In high school. It was so embarrassing to go to a hair dresser afterwards. They would be so disgusted asking who had last cut my hair.

I've done a very minor trim to take off some dead ends. I'm sure it was a bit of a hack job, though...

I've cut my bangs a ton and once I cut an A cut into face framing layers. I wouldn't do a full on cut though. I'd be nervous about the back!

My bangs. My old hair stylist taught me how and now that I moved any new stylists are so disgusted I would ever do such a thing!

I dye my own hair and cut my own hair, trim bangs, and I also have a hair thinning scissor, I have really thick hair and a lot of it so if i don't control it often, it looks out of control. been doing this since high school. i have watched you tube videos for instruction, inspiration. there have been a few instances where i've lopped off more than i meant to oooooops. for the most part, they have turned out fine, plus i just don't have the money to spend on regular hair cuts and dye jobs. i do use 2 mirrors angled at each other so I can see how I'm cutting on the back part of my hair. it's hard to explain tips, the best I would say is to check out some you tube videos for how tos.

I trim my own hair whenever I get the desire to trim off my split ends. I have pretty thick, long hair, so it's not like anyone could tell either way. Plus I don't really "style" my hair, so it never seems that worth it to pay $80 for a haircut! (I feel like I would be the "frumpy old bag" contestant on What Not to Wear!)

Yes, and it was never worth it for me! My freshman year high school picture needs to be burned!

I trim my bangs.
I don't think I could do the rest of my head because I can't see what is going on back there!
I watched a YouTube video once that said you should always trim your bangs with the scissors pointing up rather than across.

Not my own hair, but I cut my son's hair recently. Suffice it to say this is not my strong suit.

@looch: I cut DH and D's hair all the time. But, it doesn't take much skill to buzz it all off. I'm not using clippers on my own head, though, lol

I don't have bangs.
DH convinced me to go to somewhere and get it done, lol. The problem is I just moved and don't know of any affordable, good places around here. It's such a pain to find a place I like (that's not too much!) All I want is a few inches cut off...not a style and all that. It's always so expensive, though!

@Dandelion: Oh I used scissors, lol. My son hates going to the salon so I tried to convince him to sit still for me for like 10 minutes. I got the back, but the front, not so beautiful.

@looch: D is the opposite. He loves the salon and will sit so nice for them. For me, he acts like I'm torturing him, lol. So, I'm at the point where I just let it go and either my dad or D's dad will get it done cause they're sick of looking at it. I don't like paying for him or DH's hair to be done, cause I'd rather mess it up myself than pay someone else to do it, lol.

@autumnlove: now I want to see!!!
Not me, I never trust myself with anything like that... I'm to vain and prefer to leave those things to professionals! Lol! Seriously though, every time I've tried to DIY a beauty treatment it turned out terrible.

I cut my loooong hair into a bob my freshman year of college - spur of the moment decision, did it in my dorm room. It actually looked pretty good! I've got no idea where I found the courage to do it, but I never regretted it.
