I just got top braces on today (I've had the bottoms for a couple months.) My teeth are sore!!! The bottoms never hurt.

Never. Good thing because i'm not sure my parents could have afforded them when I was a kid.

Yes, twice.
I got a full set as a kid, then I went for a short 9 week treatment to correct some shifting teeth in my 20s.

Nope!
Also, I've never had a cavity. Just thought I'd throw that in for good measure lol
As a kid I always wanted braces though, I thought they looked cool

I had them in middle school! I was thrilled because I was the last of my friends to get them! I had a pretty bad overbite. When people compliment my smile now I say "thanks, my parents paid a lot for it!"

Twice, wish I could do one more round on my uppers!
honeydew / 7303 posts
This is my first round. I actually never remember going to the dentist as a kid. I'm not sure I did!

Yes. I was like 7 when I got them. Both DH and I had braces and are pretty confident that both kids are going to need them. But I'm hoping their gaps close when their adult teeth come in.

Oh, yes. Twice! Once in middle school for 2 years and then again in high school for 3 years! I hated it.
@yellowbird: hope your mouth feels better soon!

Ugh, had them for AGES as a teenager, I think from when I was 12 to when I was 17. I never got used to the pain, I'd cry and cry every time they got tightened. I must be extra sensitive to teeth pain.
honeydew / 7235 posts
Yes!! I had them for three years in middle school.
My teeth have shifted so much I'm thinking about doing invisilign, but want to wait until I have another baby. My jaw shifted around a lot while pregnant! It was so weird.
pomelo / 5509 posts
No, I had no glaring problems that required them, and the dentist said it was my choice whether I got them for cosmetic reasons. At 13 I was like "Hell no!" But 30-year-old me wishes I had gotten them because I hate my gaps.
clementine / 928 posts
Yes! When I was 25, got them off a few months before our wedding at 27

I had invisalign. It worked well but they weren't invisible. I felt really self conscious about them. Unfortunately you don't know they're not truly invisible until your trays are in and you're out a bunch of money:(

Nope, though my teeth aren't too bad, only the bottom ones are crooked and you can't really see them
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I had braces in middle school - thank god because my teeth were bad! Then I didn't wear my retainers and my teeth shifted enough that I did Invisalign after college. Both hurt plenty, and like @BeBop: said the Invisalign isn't invisible. But it was worth it for sure.
I am quite sure our kids will need braces too. I'm surprised how many people here didn't!
pomegranate / 3706 posts
I never did! My little sister did and I was jealous- especially when she got to pick cool colors for them when she got them tightened.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
I had them and glad I did. I didn't need them for long, so the little amount of paint was worth it.

I never have. My dentist wants me to get them but I'm scared. I have an underbite and after my teeth are straightened I would need surgery to align my jaw.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I had braces for 5 years-grades 1-6. I have great teeth still! And my mil works for an orthodontist so our kids will have them, too.
honeydew / 7235 posts
@BeBop: @Foodnerd81: how long did you have to wear the invisilign?? You have to pay each time you need a new tray right??
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@hellobeeboston: My teeth were pretty messed up, so I think it was almost 2 years total? I had to pay one fixed rate and it covered the whole thing, evaluation, all the trays, visits, adjustments, the works. It did not cover the retainers after. And it was pretty $$$- I had them done in NJ before I moved to Boston. Insurance covered part of it.
I don't know if it would have cost less if I needed fewer aligners (trays). The cost of traditional braces was almost the same as the invisalign.

I had them in middle school. I used to cry when they would get adjusted it hurt so much!
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Yes, I had them for 3-4 years when I was 22. Getting them on and tightened were the worse!
persimmon / 1177 posts
Yep, had them as a child. Sadly my bottom teeth got pretty crooked when my wisdom teeth came in, so I could really use braces on them again
honeydew / 7303 posts
@dreamocracy: I feel like crying right now! I can barely bite on anything
kiwi / 613 posts
@hellobeeboston: I'm jumping in to answer, cause I'm currently doing Invisalign.... I'm not sure if every place is like this, but I paid a flat fee ($5500) so I don't pay every time I switch trays...and they definitely are NOT invisible!! Especially when you have to get your attachments on your front teeth, like me... I get really self conscious about it!
honeydew / 7303 posts
@blackbird: I want to take ibuprofen so bad, but I can't because I'm pregnant! I havent tried Tylenol because it doesn't have anti - inflammatory effects so I assume it won't help much. Hoping it eases up in the next few days.
persimmon / 1343 posts
poor thing, it should ease up in a day or two, in the meantime, smoothies & soup! If I recall correctly, tylenol helps take the edge off
nectarine / 2932 posts
I'm sorry you're still in pain! I have invisalign at the moment, and my teeth hurt for a little while every time I switch trays. I try to do it at night before bed. Tylenol usually takes the edge off for me. I hope you're feelings better soon!
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yep. 6th-8th grade. I remember the day after getting them on, I was eating oatmeal and accidentally hit my spoon on my front teeth. I cried! Haha.
For the most part, my teeth are still straight. There's one bottom tooth that's shifted a little but not enough to bother me. It usually moves back when I wear my old retainer (ew).

@hellobeeboston: My dentist ran a special at the beginning of the year a couple of years ago and did the whole thing (trays/visits/retainers afterwards) for $3500. I think that was when Dentists had just started getting certified for it, it was previously done by orthodontists, so she ran the special to get it off the ground and sell it to patients that clearly weren't there for orthodontia. My insurance paid for $1500 of orthodontia a year, so we were responsible for $2K. I changed trays every 2 weeks, and had to go in to see the dentist 1x a month to get my next 2 trays and so she could check my teeth and that the new trays fit properly.
The buttons are super noticeable. And I had a crossbite in the front of my mouth so I had like 1 million buttons in the front and I might as well have had metal braces because that's how much I hated flashing my teeth with buttons all over them.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
No I've never had them. My teeth aren't post-braces straight but they're pretty good!
I'm sorry they hurt!!!
