Yeah.... It's one thing if I asked you to tell me what you want... And esp it's not even the norm that this person gets a physical gift...

Uh, no. I'd likely not get them anything this year.

I have and it's been a turn off on gifting.

Clearly, what they have received in the past hasn't been good enough. Easy solution- no more gifts!

@BandDmommy: What a lovely person . I'd just flat out tell her you and DH are not gifting for adult birthdays any more but that you'll still send a card and she's free to do the same on either of your birthdays.

I would just ignore it.

I ask my parents for ideas for their bday but they never just give them to me. But I wouldn't think it was weird cause we do gifts. If we didn't do gifts that would be weird.

@BandDmommy: Since it is your MIL, I would tell your husband about the text and let him decide if he'd like to get his mother the gift as requested, speak to her about it or ignore it! Why do people have to make things so uncomfortable sometimes?!

Yes, I have someone like this in my life, too. I think gifts for adults birthdays, unless it's a milestone and there's a celebration maybe (maybe!), is ridiculous.
Over the years there were requests from this person. One year it was a television and after finding the exact television that was requested, jumping through hoops and picking it up myself after being sick, I later found that they bought something different and moved the one I purchased to the beach house. That kind of killed presents for me.

I would just ignore the text, pretend i never got it and just do nothing.

It was just my moms birthday and she is the best and would do anything for me and my siblings. I sent her a message a few weeks ago asking what she wanted. She then responds in a group with all of us (her, my siblings, me) telling us we are not allowed to get her anything and when she sees each of us next we can do dinner. we sent her flowers anyway and I'll get her a small gift for when I see her next week.

I can't imagine her sending me an unsolicited text demanding a light fixture. But she is the best so I would get t for her. But in this case it seems so weird!! Send nothing.

Wow. I would seriously be put off unless I specifically asked the person for a gift suggestion. I'd just ignore her and purposely not get her the items he requested.
