I worked as a night aid for a 96 year old gentleman recovering from colon cancer surgery. I'd get to work at 10 p.m. and work until 7 a.m. I could sleep while he slept, but had to wake when he needed me (intercom system). On days when he was up a lot, I'd drink sodas to stay awake.

Yup, I worked from 3am to noon at a TV station once. Coffee, soda, chocolate. I just ate a lot, honestly. Food helps me stay awake.

@mediagirl: DH has a week of 12 hour overnight shifts! I think I will throw some extra snacks in his bag!

I used to work at a Disney hotel, and started out doing swing shifts (3p-11:30p oor the like). It was actually perfect, because it was during my early college years, so I would work, go out and party, get home at 3am, and sleep until noon. Then I'd wake up and do it all again!
I worked graveyard at the hotel, too, and that sucked. I called out a lot and dropped an entire semester of classes

Sort of unusual--I work for a morning TV show and my hours are 6:15 to 3:00. Waking up at 5:30 is tough, especially since I'm not a morning person but overnights are way tougher I'm sure! I mostly go to bed early because I don't really like coffee so I'm not much help, haha. I think extra snacks for energy is a good idea. Good luck to him!

@mrsmenow: glad to hear I'm not the only one who ate to stay awake!
@autumnlove: Ugh... Yes! Food!
@MrsSCB: You're so lucky you don't have to go in earlier! Our news started at 4:30!!

Yep, I used to work 12am-8am. I sometimes had a soda but mainly ate snacks to help me stay awake.

My whole career has been weird hours. No caffeine, just keep busy and run on endogenous steroids!

I work 60+ hours a week 3 months out of the year. I take it easy when I'm home and make sure I get a good amount of sleep.
I also drink soda, though being pregnant, I'm limiting it much more than in the past.

I worked overnights for a summer in college and it was AWFUL. Not for this girl! I am actually applying for a job that is 12p-8 or 9p (depending on the day). I was thinking about it and if I were to do that I'd actually have more time with J in the day than I do with my 8-5 job, especially since I'd miss all of the rush hour traffic.

@mediagirl: oh for sure! We start at 7:00 so it could be worse. I used the work for an evening show so from 2:00pm to 11:00 and being a night person, I actually preferred that

I used to work 3-10:30 at one job & then 11-7am at another. Loooots of coffee, energy drinks, and I slept every chance I got. Of course I got pregnant and had to stop the energy drinks. Boo hiss.

At one job I worked 8p-6a, another 4a-2p 3 days a week and 2p-10p another 2 days. The former was fine because with the very rare request for me to work days (12p-8/10p) thrown in 8p-6a was my regular schedule, give or take an hour business depending. The latter was really hard because it was a set schedule, but the hours varied wildly. I survived on coffee, Red Bull and Cokes. I lasted almost a year on that schedule, but it was really hard on my body--I was constantly tweaking from the caffeine.

Ugh yes! I worked noon to 8 MWThF & then 4am-noon every Saturday for over a year at the hospital! Those Saturday mornings were killer since the rest of the week my internal clock was shifted to staying up & waking later. If I got 3 hours a sleep Friday night I was doing good! I drank an energy drink omw to work & again at about 7am after we got breakfast.
On occasion I had to stay from my afternoon shift overnight to 7am to cover our night tech. Idk how I stayed up during those nights.... I just did! blegh.
I miss the hospital but most definitely don't miss shift work!

When I was in high school I worked after school (4:00 or 4:30) til midnight or 2am most nights. I drank a LOT of energy drinks. We've got this stuff here called V which has huge amounts of guarana and caffeine, and I basically lived off the stuff. That and the free fries my manager let us eat!

Yup, about once or twice a month. I'm a scientist so my studies don't usually go as planned. So a 12 hour study turns into a 14 hour study. My DH knows that when I say I'll be an hour late, it means I'll be home in about 3 hours. The life as a scientist.

I never have, but my husband has. He says he just got used to it. I don't think I ever could!
