A friend from college had surgery while pregnant. It was her appendix or gall bladder. Anyway, she is fine, the baby is now 18 months and totally fine.
Hugs to you.

Me! I had knee surgery at 6w. I opted for spinal anesthesia.
The basics of surgery while pregnant, as I understand them:
-Weigh the potential harm to fetus w gain to mom. Elective surgeries should be deferred.
- First trimester concerns revolve around anesthesia and effects on early organ development
-Second trimester is the best trimester if it is possible to wait
-Third trimester concerns revolve around the size of the uterus and how it displaces maternal organs in the abdomen. Also the patient may need to be positioned slightly differently to avoid laying flat on their back for a long surgery.
The most common surgeries for pregnant women are appendix or gall bladder removal.
Bottom line, I think surgery during pregnancy is uncommon but not rare. The doctors (surgeons and anesthesiologists) will have experience treating the pregnant patient.

@Bluebonnet: @Banana330: thank you! These stories are quite reassuring.
@MsHangry: I would be 6months (maybe 6m+1 week) along. Thank you for sharing all of that info and your experience. I would be put out under general anesthetic.

A friend of mine had her ankle operated on while pregnant! 8 months!! She was put under and did fine. Had to work from home the last two months because she was on crutches and her mom moved in to help her a lot

Yes, I had surgery at 19 weeks because I broke my ankle. I was put fully under and had to stay in the hospital for two days. The pain was intense, but they were able to give me Tylenol with pain killer in it so that helped. I had to stay off my ankle for 8 weeks so I just worked from home the entire time. DH had to make my lunch everyday and really got to experience taking care of someone, before the baby came. I was on pain meds for a while and we joke that's why our baby is so chill and relaxed about everything! Now, one year after the surgery and everything is back to normal with my ankle.
I was happy it happened in my second trimester because I didn't have that big of a baby bump yet and had to crawl up and down our two sets of stairs. Also, the crutches suck so I got one of those granny canes and walkers. Yup I look like an 80 year old women!
Good luck on your surgery!

A good friend of mine had surgery to remove kidney stones while pregnant. She had this done in the 2nd trimester and the recovery was very quick.

A coworker had a harmless ovarian cyst while pregnant. She had it removed when she was maybe 4 months along? Everything went just fine. I think she had the surgery on a Thursday or Friday and was back at work the following Wednesday.

I had a gallbladder surgery when I was about two weeks into my second trimester. It was an unplanned surgery so I was so scared. I was really comforted by the fact that the surgeon on duty that day discussed my case with a fellow surgeon and contacted my OB/GYN to ask for their opinions. The surgery went smoothly, but I was still very scared for my baby. I had so many ultrasounds done because of the surgery that I lost count, given very strong narcotics, had an MRI, and got gen anesthesia. Major mommy guilt for sure! When my baby was born, the first thing I did was to check he had ten toes, ten fingers and check for deformation. He was perfect. Today, he's 2 yrs old and loves to sing ️ Good luck with your sugery and take it easy. My DH stayed home for a week to out help with our then 9 mos old toddler.

@HTownMom: Wow! that must have been rough. I will be early 3rd but will be mobile.
@Kimberlybee: Thanks for sharing
@lamariniere: They said it would be a week recovery but that I would feel fine after 3-4 days.
@BunnyDragon: wow, I can't imagine how difficult that must have been. I won't be having that type of testing done as most of it was done pre-pregnancy aside from follow up ultrasounds to monitor. Happy to read such a positive outcome

@MsHangry: Great summary!! I would add that another reason it is better to avoid surgery during 3rd trimester is that the uterus can be more irritable and susceptible to stimulation that could cause contractions and initiate labor, possibly leading to premature delivery.
@Reese: MsHangry is absolutely right, it is uncommon but not rare by any means to have surgery while pregnant. Your anesthesiologist and the rest of the team will be prepared to take care of you!

@Reese: also I'm sure they will constantly be monitoring the baby through the whole surgery to make sure everything is good with their heart rate and movement! And as mentioned the team of doctors will definitely be prepared. If you are worried make sure to talk a lot to your doctor before hand and get all your questions answered to help calm your nerves!! Best wishes!
