We bought a 4x2 Expedit before they were discontinued. I'm curious to see if anyone has tried out the new Kallax system? I'm in love with this green one!!

I saw it there a few weeks ago. I wish I had somewhere to put it. They had the display in white...didn't notice green.

I think they're supposed to be very similar, but the Kallax has some kid-friendly improvements. I'm buying one as soon as DH and I can get to Ikea together. I'll report back if I remember!

@Dandelion: Did you like it? I'm thinking of getting it this weekend to tame the junk in the family room. I'm alllll about no clutter!

@spaniellove: yeah...I have a tv stand that has the cube look, so it would go well with it. You can also fit standard canvas baskets in the cubbies (I have 5 on the bottom of my tv stand...for toys.)

Yep I have a Kallax shelf in the nursery. They are almost exactly the same as the old Expedits (I have 2 Expedit shelves in my living room). I think the outside boards are slightly thinner? I could measure if you'd like. Not sure about any "kid friendly" additions either... they use all the same parts as far as I remember. I do not think the Expedit is anymore or less "kid friendly" than the Kallax, they both seem completely safe to me (no parts that could come off easily or anything).
I like both because they're stylish, inexpensive and you can get drawers and cubbies that fit it perfectly.

@pui: nice, thanks for the report!
I am just happy they kept the same dimensions. My scrapbook paper collection is very happy right now.

@pui: Supposedly they made the corners rounder and more secure - better glued together? Not sure what that even means.

I read that there was only a slight difference in them that reduced the amount of material use to make them more environmentally friendly.

We have expedit and kallax (in different rooms) and they're very similar. I got it in black and set it up with a cheap black desk we had from walmart to make a desk/storage center. Love me some good ikea storage :).
I purchased some Threshold bins from Target (when they were on sale a few weeks ago) and they fit perfectly:

Isn't it pretty much the same thing? My sister got the expedit and we plan on getting kallax for the nursery.

@Weagle: The corners do not look "rounded" to me... but maybe they are very slightly compared to the Expedit? Also I don't know what they mean about the parts being glued together better, I'm pretty sure the Expedit and the Kallax went together the same way. Both are really secure and don't seem like parts would come off easily.

@pui: I love this toy area! The watercolors are so pretty. Perfect Montessori space. I'm taking notes.

@allison: Haha thanks! I posted more photos of the nursery to the August boards' "nursery" thread, if you want to check them out!
Sorry to threadjack!

We have the 2x2 Kallax in high-gloss turquoise in the nursery closet (I loved that green one, too, but the turquoise matches the nursery) and a 4x4 Expedit in our office. I really can't tell much of a difference between them - the dimensions of the cubbies (for baskets, etc) seem really close, if not identical, and can accommodate the same types of baskets/drawers. My husband didn't notice a difference in assembly, either. The only thing I found annoying about the high-gloss variety was that every edge had a sticker on it (to prevent scratching, I'd assume) that were really difficult to remove.

We just moved and the house is half as small as our old house and has no storage. So I am now invested in kallax.
Ignore the mess right now it holds everything. The black one is an expedit.

We have the same vertical bookshelf in a Expedit and Kallax. They definitely look slightly different. And our Kallax is much shorter than the Expedit! I don't know if I just selected the wrong one? The Kallax looks different too....stockier? I'll take a picture when LO wakes up from her nap and compare.
But otherwise they look virtually the same. I don't really see why the Kallax is more "kid friendly"?
