I always love snail mail, so that would be my route!

If you're looking for a special option via email maybe try paperless post or treat. I vote handwritten if you can find the time though, it's really special to get something in the mail!

I hoard nice/cute note cards like @illumina: so I would send a hand-written note.

A nice card/letter definitely says "i went the extra effort" but in this day and age, a heartfelt email is appreciated, too

Hand written, but it depends on the person. Like @looch: said, a phone call could make a huge difference if they're that type.

Any kind of heartfelt thank you would mean a lot to me. When someone goes out of their way, whether through FB message, email, or snail mail... it all hits home the same way. I guess I would see what type of person they are - are they the sentimental type, quick and efficient type, etc - and go from there. What would they most likely do if you two switched places? That always helps me figure out my approach since each individual is so different.

I personally love receiving cards in the mail!

For me email because honestly I toss most paper correspondence, but I'll have the email forever!
