I'm realizing that what I need is a backpack for a diaper bag. I'm always wearing L and need my arms free for chasing E around. Plus, we will be flying once every other month and think that will be easier. Having pockets on the outside for bottles is a must!

I love the Kelly Moore Chapel bag. It's my dream backpack. 
Its a camera bag/diaper bag/school bag according to the website, the inserts can be configured different ways depending on what you want to carry.

@luckypenny: i like our petunia pickle bottom boxy backpack! they often have them on ebay for much cheaper. the only thing I'd change is to have padded straps, but they don't bother me

We got a day hiker bag from Eddie Bauer when we had a gift card (random) but I really like it! We have used it primarily for hiking with LO but I may switch to using it as a diaper bag soon. I am on my phone but can get the link if you are interested. It is not as cute as some of those posted but it works well.

I have an Ergo Baby backpack, and it's perfect for carrying around with a toddler and baby. There are two side pockets for bottles that provide a little insulation. The front flap is a magnet, and it's easy to access snacks for DS1. I put a change of clothes and diapers in the main zipper compartment, and there is also another zip in the back for a changing pad. Unfortunately they don't sell them anymore, but I've seen them on eBay before.

The boken everyday diaper bag isn't amazingly cute, but it's perfect for being super lightweight, big enough to carry everything for 2, having your hands free and so well designed. I can actually find things! Highly recommend!

If you're looking for something cheap that you're not worried about messing up, I've seen some cute ones at Target (in the purse/bag section). There are some solids, which are gender neutral & some pretty prints, which I like, but your husband probably wouldn't. This print is gender neutral enough, I think...
