L will only sleep on me. I nurse, or rock to sleep and the minute I put him in his bassinet he wakes up and cries/screams. I let him cry a bit and try to calm him down but he will only sleep these days if I'm holding him.
This mama needs some sleep, even an hour

Oh those are the days... Yeah how old is LO? For naps I let DD nap on her tummy very early on. I know it was risky, but since it was during day time I could monitor her the whole time and she would only sleep by herself that way. And I also started co-sleeping too.

Just hang in there! Try to get some naps in during the day when baby sleeps (I know it's so much easier said than done). Can SO take turns with you so you can get some sleep?

@snowjewelz: I've been putting him on his side, all wrapped up and warm with rolled u blankets around him to feel like someone is there.
I have been putting him in bed next to me but I'm worried about DH rolling

I do the night time stuff because DH is in a high risk job and needs his sleep to be fully alert

For us, it just took time. H would not really sleep unless she was being held, so we co-slept. I ended up sleeping with covers to my waist, in a nursing tank, with armwarmers on to keep myself warm, and she slept on my chest. When she was bigger, I moved her to my side, but still with the same set-up. Once she was 8 weeks old, she was able to sleep in her crib more.

My DS was just like this. We ended up co-sleeping because he wanted to be held all night. We started out with a co-sleeper that goes in the middle of the bed. As he got a little bigger I just had him next to me. I kind of slept curled around him, protecting him. I perfected being able to sleep without moving.
After a while, I got to where I could put him in the PnP next to the bed for a segment of sleep. But if he kept waking up, I'd give up on it and co-sleep until he woke up again.
If I were to do it all over again, I'd get something I could side-car to the bed.

@babycanuck: it's pretty normal for a 5 week old! Those days were such a blur. I think when DD was that young, there was no way she'd roll/move away, so she slept next to me and I just put a body pillow at the edge and had my arm around her. Co-sleeping def isn't for everyone though...
What about baby wearing? That way he can be snuggled up against you but you can still have your hands free to do things, or take a nap too (sitting up) and not be afraid you'll drop him?

@snowjewelz: I can baby wear but it's all timing. I can't get him in my wrap unless he's calm, the minute he cries he won't have it. I'll have to keep trying it. I make sure when I'm nursing at night I put something against threaded of the bed because I have fallen asleep nursing and if he drops off he will end up still on me and not on the floor.

I know the sleep deprivation can really get to you And I can attest that he won't sleep on you forever! For the first 3 months (ok what am I saying, first 6 months) I did whatever I had to for her to sleep. Holding/rocking/nursing, etc. I never sleep trained, but just encouraged good sleeping habits. DD took a while but finally falls asleep and STTN herself at 7 months I think. Granted we still co-sleep.

@babycanuck: We had good luck with getting LO to sleep by herself in the Rock n' Play. I think the incline helped and also the fact that it was sort of cozy around her. We swaddled her and then put her in there and it was the only place she would sleep besides someone's arms.

@babycanuck: yeah, RnP is good!! How about the car seat/driving for the day? My LO is almost 8 weeks and not a great sleeper st night but he will do stretches in the RnP, and he will sleep forever in car seat. With my first I remember this phase starting to get better around 10 weeks.

@babycanuck: I can assure you that that will likely not be the case. H is two and while she is cuddly, she doesn't like to sleep with us unless she is sick.
My thought was that I would do whatever it took to get some sleep, and for us it was cosleeping. I was against it originally, but I have a high sleep need. Have you tried the Arm's reach cosleeper? He could still be near you/smell you but in his own space.
H also hated the PNP/Moses basket because she would startle awake when she hit her arms on the sides. Maybe something a bit bigger will help him?

I went through the same thing weeks 3-6. DD stopped sleeping flat in the mini crib by my bed and would fuss and cry when she was put down. Every night DH and I would wind up cosleeping with her just so we could get some rest after spending hours trying to rock her and put her down. It was giving me anxiety though so I had to stop. What worked for us was the RNP. I think it makes DD feel cozy. We started a nighttime routine too. She gets a bath, then lotion and pajamas. After that I nurse her and then give her to DH. He reads her a story and rocks her, then puts her in the RNP. She sleeps 3.5-4 hours at a time and wakes twice a night to nurse now. It's loads better than it was a week ago.

Ok thanks everyone. I need to find out where I can get a rock n play here...I haven't seen them at babies r us Canada.
Eta a friend had to special order from the USA - they don't sell them here but he's letting me borrow theirs. Fx this works!
