Potty training question - so my 3 year old is finally going pee/poo consistently on her potty and toilets both in and outside of the house. However she has been holding her pee in at daycare even for as long as 6 hours, and doesn't even have an accident. As a result she has gotten two bladder infections (urinary tract infection). I don't want her to damage her body from repeated infections and resistance to antibiotics! We think it may have to do with her being too hyper and excited playing with friends and toys at daycare. Any experienced moms want to help me trouble shoot this problem? All I can come up with is taking away iPad time. Putting her back in diapers is not an option. Thanks for any helpful advice.

When I worked at a preschool we had regular potty break. I would ask the staff to put her on a schedule, and reward her when she goes. Good luck!

Agreed with pp. Her teachers should be managing this! Have a chat with DD about how she needs to listen to her body and slow down for a potty break. Maybe watch the Daniel Tiger episode about it?

My son is like this, he'll go if the entire class goes, so maybe suggest timed intervals at daycare?
eta: I wouldn't take away ipad time for this kind of thing, the punishment doesn't match the crime.

yes, i agree that the daycare staff needs to give her regular potty breaks. doing it with other kids may be helpful. even if she says she doesn't need to go, she can sit for 20-30 seconds to see if anything happens.

My son was only recently potty trained when he started back at school in August, and he would hold it the whole class. Luckily it was only about 3 hours, but I still worried about it. After a couple of weeks of nothing happening, they started taking him alone and giving him a few by himself. It turned the situation around completely. They already give 3 potty breaks during the 3 hours they are there, but he was having issues with everyone else in the bathroom. Once he did it by himself a few times, he grew comfortable enough to go with the other kids in there and they didn't have to take him by himself any more. Any chance she's just nervous to go in a new bathroom with a crowd?

I definitely wouldn't implement a punishment here. DD often doesn't want to go and we've settled on a 'just give it a try' approach. If she doesn't go after a few minutes we try again later. I sing to her or read a book once she's on the potty and it distracts/relaxes her usually enough that she'll go. Once we got over the roadblock she's fine and we don't generally have to do this often anymore. I get that the teachers probably don't have enough time to do this for long for just one kid, but if they can help a bit until she gets over this issue, that would be good.

@gracecat: Hi, how is your girl doing? I found this thread through a search on UTI because I am worried that my DD1 has one or is getting one. She's been happy and playful all day until bath time, she tells me that she is hurting when she has to pee. I inspected it and it's not red or irritated. She is not trying scratch at it so I don't think it's a yeast infection. She has been potty trained for a long time already and I am a SAHM and have never noticed her holding her pee. However, lately she's been trying to be more independent and wants to do everything herself (will be 3 next month) so one time this week, she pooped and tried to wipe herself. As soon as I walked in, she claimed she's finished and that she wiped herself already. So I wiped her again just to be sure. I am wondering if she didn't wipe front to back and it has escalated to a UTI. We are suppose to be on an 8 hour road trip for a family get together early in the morning. We have to start driving in 4 hours but if she has a UTI, we might have to cancel this trip. Are there any over the counter medicines I can use? What are the symptoms I need to look for? Thanks. I will call the dr first thing in the morning too.

@Kimberlybee: Hi, I'm so sorry that you have to worry about this issue too. For us, the first UTI happened after we knew that she held her pee for 6 hours. Later that night she complained that it hurt when she went pee. The next day she seemed fine until the evening again. Then she complained that it hurt again when she peed. We didn't visually inspect it but we took her to a doctor who did a urine dip test on her soaked nappy and it detected the presence of white blood cells, indicating some kind of infection. So we gave her antibiotics rather than wait 4 days for a urine lab test to confirm whether it was a UTI or not.
The second UTI was similar, we knew she held her pee for 5 hours or so and later that same evening she complained it hurt when she peed and then she even cried hard because it hurt, so we knew she must have a UTI this time and got her antibiotics. No tests were done. This was actually the last confirmed UTI she had.
The third time I was not so sure, and which might be more similar to your issue. She held her pee again for 5 hours or so but she never complained that it hurt while she was actually urinating. Instead she complained randomly when she was just standing on the bed playing. I inspected the area visually and it appeared red, not normal. The next day was the same, mostly fine all day and then once saying that area hurt, but when she was standing around, not going pee. My husband was concerned so we took her to the doctor and actually managed to get a urine sample from a toddler (imagine that!). But in the meantime we started her on antibiotics b/c the lab test would take about 4 days. After she started antibiotics there were no more complains of pain and the redness disappeared. So I was like, ok, it must've been another UTI right?! I was pretty shocked when the lab results were negative for a UTI. So what was it? I have no idea...
All I can tell you is that once you think you're sure, and the other moment you're wrong. The moral of the story is... it could be anything. There's nothing over the counter you can use. You could try to pump her with cranberry juice but it doesn't really help, as I've done my research. Lots of myths out there.
You could try to make a quick trip to the doctor first thing in the morning to pick up some antibiotics if you don't want to cancel the trip, or you could make note of some urgent care clinics along the way that you could stop by if it happened to become a full blown UTI where baby girl is complaining of pain. I'm so sorry, I hate the worrying! Good luck and let me know what comes of it.

@gracecat: Thank you so much for replying! The morning of our trip she woke up and peed without any complaints. So I thought maybe it was just irritated so I put aquaphor on her. She was very calm and pleasant during the drive, even took a 3 hour nap! However, when we got to our destination, she started to scratch at it a whole lot which she was not doing while we were at home. I gave her a warm bath right away because when I looked at it, OMG it was so red from her scratching at it! So I started second guessing myself if I had made it worse by putting aquaphor on it but that's what I have always used for diaper rashes when she was in diapers! She got very few diaper rashes after we found the right fit and a good routine. After the bath, I put an OTC cortisone made for vaginal itch on her and she stopped scratching at it right away! So I think it wasn't a UTI but not sure what was going. We're heading back home in a few hours and I will take her to the dr tomorrow to see if it is a yeast infection after all.

Maybe get a potty watch? You can set the timer for different lengths of time and it plays music when it's time to try and then automatically resets. They are like $10 at Toys R Us. I'm about to invest in one for my 2 1/2 year old who is still in diapers despite massive bribes lol
