Oh no!! Poor baby (and mama!). Are you okay with letting her cry it out a little? Whenever my LO gets like this and I've done all that I can do I try graduated extinction, with brief comfort checks at 5 minutes, then 7, then 10, then 12.... Hang in there!!

Oh no! How miserable for all of you! The only thing I can think of is to grab a pillow and blanket and camp out on her floor for a bit. Whether you pull her down to the floor with you or not is up to you. Keep it super dark and get some white noise or soft music going and try to ignore her unless she is pretty calm and then maybe rub her back. I had this tactic work once for me so perhaps it will help?

Whenever S's bedtime is "off" we just do gradual extinction...so a check after 5 mins, then another 10 and that's usually enough but often it takes her up to half an hour to settle lately. During the checks though we just pick her up and hold her until she is calm...never turn the light on, talk to her (apart from going "shhhhhh") and definitely stay in the room.

@Cherrybee: the fucking shut up would piss me off. DH is a horrible night time parent so I get a lot of the "I have to work tomorrow, whoa is me crap" but I have a line and that would have crossed it.

Can you try sleeping with her on a couch? Saved or sanity for months when B was teething... but if she won't sleep, maybe just go with it and try to get her to do something quiet and boring till she calms down.

@Cherrybee: have you tried taking her outside for fresh air and a change of scenery when this happens? Or maybe solids or a bath? You could also try putting your DH outside...

My LO did this at 7 months due to a cold and teething, and it was awful. I'm so sorry! I did like @MamaBird and wound up cuddling him on the couch watching TV together and we stayed that way most of the night. If I even thought about taking my arms from around him, he'd start freaking out. It was only one night, but I agree, it breaks your heart to hear them them sob and cry like that. Hang in there and hope it gets better soon!

Sounds like you all had a rough night, I hope it's just a fluke and things get back to normal soon.

I used to take my son out on the balcony on nights like that, as Kemma suggested, my mom was convinced he would stop crying because he thought I was going to drop him over the ledge! I think there's something to them be exposed to the fresh air that "resets" them.

@Cherrybee: I have been known to kick DH out of the bed to the guest room and bring LO to our bed. Only in emergency situations.

Outside in the stroller was my go-to for rough nights. I was the weirdo lady pushing a stroller at 11 pm on the empty suburban streets. BUT it would always calm LO down, worth it.

ETA: And I would usually just wrap a heavy blanket around her for cold nights on top if her pjs.

@Cherrybee: I feel your pain. We're weaning our LO from his pacifier, and nights have been awful. Turns out he's finally getting his upper 2nd yr molars as well, so last night was especially bad.

I wish I had thought to take him for a walk outside! I got an injection in my spine yesterday, so I couldn't have, but DH could have! We'll definitely try that tonight if we have a repeat of the miserable crying. LO didn't settle down until after 10pm, and then was up again for over an hour around 1am. And DH and I both work.

Our lo had a niht like that once, and he actually had a really sore throat. I took him to the doctor because it was so unusual for him to be so out of sorts (he was up like that every 2 hours) and he had a nasty virus. It could also be an ear infection.

Lo really likes baby einstein videos (they are free on youtube) when he is inconsolable. The music is soothing too. We cuddle on the couch and they help him settle down. He isnt a cuddler, but when he is hurting or upset it really helps him.
