I like the sound of Willa Rose better but one option that hasn't been mentioned is perhaps using another family name? When I recently did a lot of genealogical research I found some really cool names. I wish I had done it before we picked out the twins' names because it might have changed some of our decisions. It could be that you have some cool ancestor with a cool name you could use?

I would go for Dawn. I love the personal meaning, and it doesn't sound like a dinosaur to me. Rose is beautiful, but I think it's this generation's Marie or Anne where it's awfully common. There's nothing wrong with that, but I like that Willa Dawn seems more uniquely hers.

I would go Willa Dawn. I can see his point about a Dino name, but I don't think most people would unless you point it out. I have a family middle name I never really liked, but I appreciate the meaning behind it and altered it a little to use for our first daughter.

@loki: another argument for Dawn - how often are you actually going to say "Willa Dawn"? For me I pretty much never use DS's first and middle name together unless someone asks me what his middle name is. And even then I usually just say "Michael" not "Firstname Michael".

@loki: Did you aunt have a middle name that you could use instead of Dawn to honor her?

@loki: "but do i wanna saddle my child with a name i hated having my whole life?! seems kinda cruel!"
Honestly, I wouldn't. Why would you name your kid something you hate? My DD has DHs grandma's name as a middle. I don't love it, but I was open to it because I dont hate it either. If we have a son, DH wants to name him after his late father. I HAAAATE his name and will never allow it, despite it being meaningful.

Could you use Aurora instead of Dawn? They are synonyms ....Willa Aurora Rose sounds so pretty.
Or would you consider using a middle name that starts with D, like some Jewish families do to honour deceased loved ones?

Willa Roxanne (which means Dawn) is pretty cool.
Tough call! I think I'd ultimately go with Dawn over Rose, especially if you think you'll use family MNs for future kids. I always find it strange when one child has a meaningful MN and a sibling has something random.

I'd go with Rose. I just can't see giving my child a name I disliked, no matter what the meaning behind it is.

I prefer Rose. Did your aunt have a middle name you liked?

@TemperanceBrennan: +1 Willa Rose Dawn
Both of these sound fine to me. Plus I can see wanting to pass down Gloria/ Gloria vs Dawn for future generations.

@rattles: ya i'm worried it's going to be crazy common and that's why i loved the idea of using Rose as a first name!
@lady baltimore: that's a good point. any boys would have family names but no other girls would... so that's a toughie. other than my aunt, there aren't any other women we'd really want to honour/names we'd want to use... hmmm...
@Mrs. J: @Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @lady baltimore: i'm just notttt a fan of Gloria or the variants. and no one would know it was in reference to my aunt because she literally NEVER went by it so even some of her closest family members didn't know it was her name. I think I prefer Dawn, even though i don't love it either.
@QBbride: that's totally true.
i'm still conflicted, change my mind hourly. my husband is pretty anti Willa Dawn so he says my options are Gemma Dawn or Willa Rose. so we are just not discussing anymore until she's born haha.
eta: thanks so much for all your input! i'll let you know in april what we decide haha!

I think that Willa Rose sounds better, but I would go with Dawn. I think it's more important to honor family, and people don't use middle names much. It's not likely her friends, teachers, coworkers, etc. will say or even know her middle name.

I like Mae as a middle name here, but Willa Rose is pretty as well.

Willa Rose is beautiful. I think honoring your Aunt would be nice but I don't care for the names together as well.

@MrsPastryLady: I'm obsessed with Mae/May and even considered it for a first name but my husband is completely adverse to mae for some reason. I really loved maeve and he was even against that! But you're right Willa Mae would be gorgeous. It's also my mom's mom's name! But no go.
@Mrs.Pinecone316: I think we're leaning towards Rose if we go with Willa or Dawn if we go with Gemma. So we'll see!
