We have our first real day of fall weather here and I don't know how to dress DD now! We walk from home to the car to go to daycare so she needs to be warm outside. She typically just has socks on but I need to find some sort of Ugg style slipper/boot for her to wear. Today she had on a fleece jacket with hood but I noticed her hands were cold. Help educate me! What is appropriate for outside and car seat - both now and as it gets colder? What do I need to have her wear?

I loved zutano fleece booties for LO. Zutano also makes a fleece cover-all thing that has fold over hands and feet to keep extremities warm. It's fine for the car seat and works in the carrier/stroller.

@LBee beat me to it, I was going to suggest using blankets and the Zutano booties! We didn't actually use those booties, but a bunch of the kids at daycare had them and I always wished that we had gotten some for DD.
We also had a couple of these kinds of things for when it got really cold, and they worked perfectly for keeping hands and feet warm.

BUT! Baby uggs were an expensive waste of money. They won't stay on.

zutano booties all the way! and I definitely wished I had something with foldover sleeves for lo last winter--gloves never worked (she pulled them off or screamed so much putting them on that it was never worth it), and I used blankets over her but she'd always poke her arms out anyway. also, we mostly walk so we had a super warm, down bunting (from 7am enfant), so I knew her body was at least warm even if her hands were chilly

We tucked a blanket around him, over his arms, and used a shower cap style cover for the carseat. We used a separate cover for the stroller. Both by JJ Cole.

Northface makes a great fleece suit for infants. It's thin enough for the car seat but really warm, and it has flaps on the feet and hands that you can turn over to become mittens and booties as needed.

Zutano booties, smart wool baby socks, zutano (or similar) fleece one piece, a cozy hat, and a blanket. Layers are your friend! We ended up getting some wool long johns from polarn o pyret and ruskovilla for really cold days and they helped a ton- just layers under cotton or fleece pants and shirt

Is she in the car seat when you are walking or are you holding her? If she's in the car seat I recommend the shower cap style cover- blacks wind and cold and you can layer an extra blanket under it or unzip it partway in the car when it's warmed up.
Another vote for zutano booties. Seriously the only thing that stayed on my baby's feet. Any more "boot like" shoe always just fell off.
I never actually had a great fleece coat for mine and just put a blanket or the cover over her if we were in the car. We used the stroller more and I did the thick fleece bunting one pieces from Carter's and old navy, with foldover mittens, but they were too thick for the car.

My littles wear a tonne of merino and wool during winter! Merino makes a great base layer and is usually nice and light and won't overheat baby.

Totally going to invest in some Zutano booties for DS thanks to this thread! I'm curious about sizing though, DS is 2 months and I'd like to get a pair of fleece ones to last through the winter but read that they run small. Do any PP's have sizing recos/advice?

All the moms here recommend padraigs. They are knit wool with sheepskin lining. They tie on so stay on pretty well and look super cute.

I just kept my babies in footed sleepers during the winter until they could walk. We had a pair of those Zutanos and I wasn't a fan. I also had a car seat cover that went over the seat only and it was really warm! I think I found it for cheap at Target.

We haven't had too many cold days yet, but I imagine I will have her wear a sweatshirt or fleece jacket. I'll keep a heavier blanket in the car and a light blanket in her carseat that I'll keep on while I carry her into daycare.

@Kemma: any affordable recommendations? We had some wee woollies last year and they were great, but so expensive! I want to get some good base layers for the boys though.

@jedeve: unfortunately I'm in New Zealand so I'm not much help to you! Merino is a really popular option here so it's pretty reasonably priced! You could invest in 3-4 merino singlets, undershirts or onesies, mine have lasted me through two babies although I do hand wash and line dry them.

obsessed with my 7am enfant "le sac igloo" cocoon for the stroller/car seat. meant i could put him in just a footed onesie and then he'd be warm enough in the sack with just a hat (on super cold days- like ones that were 12 degrees- i put him in an LL Bean zip up fleece onepiece over his clothes, under the cocoon).
