We were casually invited for "drinks and nibbles" at a neighbor's house and I assumed it meant an after dinner or even dinner meeting. It was only after hearing the time (at 4pm) that I realized I may have misunderstood the meaning of drinks and nibbles.

British bees, please fill me in. Should we make sure to leave before dinner time or are we supposed to stick around? We are both expats living abroad and the local culture doesn't normally invite people over for dinner and I don't want to intrude. Also, what's an acceptable gift? I was thinking of bringing dessert and dessert wine.

Thanks!
