Anyone have high blood pressure in early pregnancy. Did you take any medication for it?
Pre-preg my BP was borderline high. With DS my BP was high after 36wks, but I was just put on bed rest, no meds
I'm 7 wks now and dr prescribed aldomet which is category B. Reading about potential side effects scare me, esp the depression and anxiety. I'm also wondering if there's anything category A.

I have pre existing high blood pressure and had to switch the meds I was taking to aldomet because it was one of the only safe options for high BP while pregnant. I took it from the beginning of first my pregnancy and stayed on it for 2 years while I breast fed and then still continued it as I was TTC and I'm now halfway through my second healthy (so far) pregnancy. My first pregnancy I never had a single symptom of developing pre eclampsia and delivered a healthy baby. I'm confident this pregnancy will continue to be the same. In my first pregnancy my BP got higher in the third tri and my doc added a second med because I was on the highest dose of aldomet and I still had no pre-e or any complications. I hope that makes you feel more hopeful!
As far as I know there are very few safe meds that you can take for BP in pregnancy and aldomet is one of the more commonly prescribed ones.

@californiadreams: thanks for responding. Yeah I read that aldomet is one of the safest. What dosage did you take? He has me on 500mg twice a day.

I'm on the highest dose allowed - 2000mg a day, so I take 500mg 4x/day.

I took labetalol, but my BP wasn't high until 20 weeks. I think I started it around 26 weeks.

@KatieBklyn: that name is familiar, I think that might have been the second med I was placed on in my third tri. After the birth I was told to just take the first med as both were no longer needed.

I had high blood pressure with my first pregnancy, but it didn't start creeping up past 130/90 until my third trimester. I was able to get by without meds until I was induced. I remained on BP meds (labetalol and hydralazine) for about two months postpartum as well. I'm pregnant again and I think it was high my first appointment due to anxiety, but has been fine since then. At 13 weeks the perinatologist told me to start taking low dose aspirin, which I only recently stopped at 36-37 weeks.

I've been on labetalol for years, before, during and after my first pregnancy. Side effects can be scary for sure but just trust that they have got to be better than the alternative of not treating your BP!

I took Procardia in pregnancy. Mine was taken to control an irritable uterus, but it's technically a BP med, so that's another safe option.

I was borderline before pregnancy, have been for many many years but never put on anything. I started Labetalol at about 12 weeks and was on a very low dosage. As I progressed they just increased my dosage as needed.
