Has your toddler ever had a high fever for a week or more? What did it turn out to be? My daughter has been running a fever of 104+ since Monday morning and is so miserably ill. I am so worried but the doc seems to be unconcerned and thinks its just a virus.

Never that long, no! That is concerning? Sounds like am infection of some kind. What other symptoms?

@RubyCali: we went to the Dr on weds and they said it was a virus. So I don't think they tested for that. I called again on Friday because she kept getting sicker and they said wait until Monday to bring her in.
@travellingbee: she has a runny nose and a cough, so nothing unusual. But she is completely exhausted and lethargic, and has basically laid on the couch for 4 days straight. She isn't eating but we are getting her to drink fluids. Normally she has high fevers but never for this long and she is usually happy and playful even when she has a fever.

Yikes!!! No, my LO has never had a fever that high for that long - - if she did, I think at this point I would push your doctor to see her again.
We've had several days of semi-high (right around 100) fevers due to teeth, but never up around 104 and not for more than 2-3 days/nights.

5+ days of high fever usually requires bloodwork in our experience. Definitely take her in tomorrow.

LO had one for about a week. She had pneumonia and they gave her antibiotics. It turned out to be viral pneumonia so the antibiotics didn't do anuthing. They would have kept testing for other things (UTI, ear ache, etc) but the antibiotic should have taken care of everything except a virus. I hope your LO feels better soon.

At five days, we start to worry about Kawasaki and at 7-10 days we start working up for fever of unknown origin. I'd go in tomorrow for more answers/tests.

That's so scary. Our LO only had a fever that high once and we were seen after 24 hours. He had pneumonia and antibiotics got rid of it. Our LO had repeat respiratory issues so fever and a cough was super concerning.

@Corduroy: @ladybee: I thought maybe it was pneumonia because she has had a cough for awhile (2 weeks?) But she doesn't seem to have labored breathing. She has blue/grey lips for an hour this morning so i was getting ready to bring her to the ER but they pinked up and have been pink since. What other symptoms did your LOs have? Sorry you guys had to go thru it.

@SleepyMonkey: he had had a cold for ten days so they think it was viral and moved into his chest. He had a nasty cough, was lethargic, and the fever. Plus when he gets sick he gets retractions at the ribs.

My 3yo just had this! Not over 104, but between 101-104 for 5 days. They couldn't find anything (same like yours, just regular cold symptoms) and did a urine test which came out fine. The doc gave us antibiotics in case it was bacterial but he didn't really think it was. I also discovered that he responded better to ibuprofen than acetaminophen. He started feeling better the day after we took him in, of course. I hope she turns around soon

@SleepyMonkey: I hope you find answers or relief soon! M is only 1 and has RSV, bronchiolitis a few times and pneumonia. Our pedi always prefers to see him.

They can test for RSV and the flu. We just had it done. But I'd definitely be concerned about a bacterial infection at this point... Our LO currently has some nasty bronchial infection that he is on antibiotics for and I was alarmed that he had over a 102 fever for more than 48 hours. It wasn't responding well to the advil either. I think we've finally gotten over the hump though and he hasn't spiked a fever since around noon. I hope everything goes well at the doctor and they can give you some answers. Hope your LO feels better very very soon!

D had this about a month ago. At first they said it was just some generic virus. Then we went back a few days later and it turned out to be roseola. He also got an ear infection as a result of the virus, which only showed up at our second visit.

@SleepyMonkey: this just happened to a friend, misdiagnosed as a virus. Turned out to be a kidney infection!

My daughter just went through this and she had a UTI. And then, this past week the fever came back and I took her in. The urine test came back negative but a blood test showed elevated white blood cell counts and we got antibiotics. Two days later I got a phone call that it is a UTI, her longer culture showed a UTI.

With my first, he had roseola... fever broke on day 4 or 5 and a rash broke out all over his trunk. But only for a few hours... we were lucky we saw it. We had him tested twice for a UTI during the week. With my second, she ended up with an antibiotic-resistant e.coli in her bladder..!! She took a super strong antibiotic to clear it and they wanted to test her kidneys to make sure they weren't damaged, but we ended up not testing her. It was scary though! And she had horrible diarrhea the entire week she took the antibiotic.

Thanks for the responses. I am so mad at myself for not trusting my gut. I knew 6 days of fever and her being so uncharacteristically lethargic and sickly was a red flag...im so upset right now. If it turns out to be very serious, the doctors office is going to get a serious bitching out from me tomorrow.

@SleepyMonkey: my sister had pneumonia last year. That consisted of an uncontrollable fever, other cold like symptoms and vomiting. My mom had taken her to the ER the day before she was diagnosed. I made my mom take her back in when the thermometer only said high and no longer gave a number. It was scary!

For what it's worth, my lo had a fever of 104 for 2 days last week, Tylenol would only bring it down to 102, we switched to Motrin and it worked much better. Her dr said she'd like to see her if the higher fever lasted for over 48 hours.

Turned out to be a UTI. I'm livid at the on call nurse for telling us to wait until today to bring her in. I told her that my daughter was unable to get up from the couch and walk around and that she kept getting sicker and sicker, and the nurse on call dismissed it. I don't understand why.
I feeling like the worst mom in the world right now for ignoring my instinct and the obvious signs that something wasn't right. I could have saved her 2 days of suffering if I hadn't trusted the nurse on call. Goddammit.

@SleepyMonkey: Please don't beat yourself up! It happens to every mom at one time or another. Same thing happened to my infant a couple months ago. Just give her lots of extra cuddles and she'll be SO much better once she gets those antibiotics in her system for 24 hours. Hugs
ETA: I would say something to the doctor about the nurse on call dismissing the signs you talked about. She needs to have a review.

@SleepyMonkey: Girl, I just went through the same thing 2 weeks ago and felt like a total shit mother because he ended up with a double ear inflection. All the kids in his class got a nasty nasty virus that was giving them 103+ fevers, but most were only lasting few days. I didn't take him in for 6 days, per the on call nurse, and I felt like such an ass because he was obviously felt terrible. It's hard not to beat yourself up about it, but he was so much better after 24 hrs on the antibiotic. Hope she feels better soon!

i spent the morning sobbing at work in a bathroom stall. this is a very hard lesson learned, but i won't doubt my instincts again in the future and i'll be more aggressive about my LO's health going forward. she is much better already. she still has a fever (i called the dr about this already...) but she is acting like her happy self again. i also called the dr's office and filed a complaint against the nurse on call and told them i'm leaving the practice...they are one of the biggest practices in the city, so i doubt they give a shit. But as long as they know that this nurse is giving out idiotic advice, hopefully they will take steps against having another child to suffer needlessly because of her.
