We overpacked and didn't use much! Snacks. Phone chargers (one for each of us). A couple hats for the baby to take photos in (our own photos - we didn't get the hospital newborn package). Comfy sweats or pj pants. Nursing tank. That's really mostly it! Good luck!!

Biggest thing was an extension cord for my phone charger! I was using in the phone a lot to call and text people both times and being able to have it charge and reach it from bed was huge!

Going home outfits for you and baby
Toiletries (basics, shampoo condition soap face wash teeth stuff, lotion Chapstick)
I brought a pillow (colored pillowcase) and a towel from home. Their pillows are all plasticky and towels were small. But I did get blood on my towel.
First time I stayed in the hospital gown the whole time. Second time I brought pajamas (button up top and loose pants) and wore them during the day but changed back into the gown at night because I sweat so so much at night.
Sleep nursing bra.
Flip flops for showering and walking around (though I'm sure the hospital floors are cleaner than mine!)
Extra hair ties, hair band, barrettes to keep hair out of your face.

That's all we used I think. I also had lots of snacks but never needed them. The hospital LC gave me a tiny tube of nipple cream. I didn't need my nursing pillow there but it may have been helpful.

And both times I got there well into labor so I really didn't use anything at all until we got to the room I stayed in.

The only thing I wished I had and didn't bring was a few magazines to flip through. No heavy reading, just looking at pictures.

Chargers, toiletries, and going home outfits for everyone.

For DH, he liked having his own pillow and blanket even though the hospital will provide.

For baby, we brought his car seat and going home outfit/blanket and that's it. The hospital provided everything else we needed - diapers, wash cloths, soap, wipes, linens, etc.

For me, the essentials were:
chapstick
flip flops (for shower, walking around in)
toiletries
my own pillow
boppy
eye mask
nursing tanks and loose pants - like another poster, i wore these during the day but changed into a gown to sleep in. You're a giant sweatball/gross in the evenings postpartum.

Shampoo/conditioner/lotion/face wash/moisturizer/hair cream
Change of clothes to go home in

I packed a bunch of other stuff but did not use it at all. My husband went home to shower and check on our animals/take something with baby's smell on it home.

I would not bring a blanket. There were a few times I leaked from gushes of blood. So happy we could leave that laundry there!

DH did pack an extra pillow (with a bright pillow case)

I overpacked but it made me feel ready so I'd still overpack next time, haha!

Def clothes post birth. Wearing the gown was totally fine laboring/delivering, but my own clothes made me feel human again!

And some make-up, dry shampoo, brush, etc so I look human in pictures.

Slippers! Nurses encouraged me to take a break and walk around.

Besides the obvious, I brought/used...
notepad and pen so I could take notes (when we checked in, when I got the epidural, when i started to push, etc.)
Extra long phone-cord as pp's suggested
Nursing pillow
Robe and warm socks
Baby book for footprints
Tablet or dvd's... we checked out in a day but had we stayed longer some movies would've been nice!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: good idea, although be careful bringing anything that's super sentimental since birth is so messy and you might get stains on it. Also bring a blanket for your husband if he plans to stay with you - I forgot about mine with my second and he froze in the hospital, poor guy.

I thought of something else! I would bring a swaddleme or other swaddle thing to the hospital - I could never get the hospital blanket tight enough.

My clothes and nursing tank and nursing bras felt way too tight and uncomfortable to even put on.

Its great re-reading these as I stare down prepping our "bags" this weekend!

As an aside...I put all bags together as early as possible (starting this weekend at 34w - babies can be done but mine is stuff I still use) and put all bags - in what ever state of readiness - in the crib. This way if I have to urgently go to the hospital anyone can be given easy instructions..."go to the house and bring us everything out of the crib"....

I really didn't need/use more than that because the hospital provided all of the food for me and the diapers/wipes/swaddle blankets/shirts for the baby.

We live close to the hospital, so my husband just went home to shower and change.

What I'll bring next time:

Soft, washable blanket for baby, to bring out after the yuckiness is cleaned up

We way over-packed, but here's what we actually used:

For me:
-Insurance card and ID!!!
-Large heating pad (this was very helpful during labor)
-Popsicles (just 2-3, not the dozen we brought)
-Something to play music (we used my husband's phone)
-Drinks and straws (I drank Gatorade during early labor, water during later labor and champagne after birth!)
-Snacks (I only ate some pretzels with peanut butter during labor but had other snacks after labor)
-My own pillow and non-white pillowcase
-Something to wear after birth (I put snaps in the straps of a maternity dress I never cared for)
-Toiletries (chap-stick, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush , hair product, hair ties/clips, prenatal vitamins, deodorant, contacts)
-Bathrobe
-Phone and charger and long cord
-Breast pump (so that I could have the lactation consultants show me how to use it and make sure I was using the right size flanges)
-Outfit to wear home

For husband:
-Swimsuit (He got in the tub with me during labor)
-Snacks
-Fresh clothes
-Toiletries
-Phone and charger

For baby:
-Going home outfit. That's it.

ETA: A camera! Our doula took birth photos, but we used our own camera after she went home.

I agree phone charger and Chapstick is essential. Last time we also brought our regular camera so we didn't only have iPhone pics. Diapers wipes Vaseline, a few sleepers, and A&A blankets is what I'll bring for baby. Plus warm blanket and hat for car.

For me, I assume I'll need change of clothes, hair ties, make up, toiletries, I like the flip flops/slippers idea, nursing tops, I might bring my nursing pillow and snoogle pillow. I need to buy a birthing ball. Snacks. Pads. Pillow and blanket and change of clothes for DH.
