I have been tasked with organizing a trip to NYC for about 10 high school students (looking at end of April 2015 although dates are flexible). Parameters for the hotel include: reasonably priced, safe area, within walking distance to subway as they won't have a car and don't want to pay for taxis. I have personally only been to NYC once and stayed right off of Time Square (conference for my last job) so I have no idea were to begin looking. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

@purrpletulips: What is "reasonably priced" and what activities will the students be doing? I think staying in a touristy area is best with a group of teens if they are going to be doing all touristy things.

@Anagram: I would say cheaper the better but somewhere around $200/night would be reasonable. I'm still working on what they will be doing but really hitting the main sights. I'm thinking 9/11 memorial/museum, Central Park, a Broadway show, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, Battery Park, Empire State Building, etc.

@purrpletulips: Will they have chaperones? $200/night will be tough in the city, but you probably don't want them traveling back and forth to outlying areas if they are alone.

@Truth Bombs: There will be chaperones, our principal said last time she took high schoolers they stayed in one of the boroughs but can't remember which.

@purrpletulips: OK since there will be chaperones I would suggest looking at Weehawken or Jersey City. There is easy ferry access to the city, and the hotel prices will be much more reasonable.

@purrpletulips: I'd check Hotel Pennsylvania--call directly and ask about group discounts. It's right near Times Square and it's not "nice" but it's totally fine for a school trip. We all stayed there for a cheerleading competition my little sister was in years ago and there were tons of school and cheer groups. I remember back then, it was definitely under $200 with an AAA discount.
There are also Hilton Garden Inns, Days inns, etc in Manhattan and they all run specials from time to time--and you may get a group discount. I'd narrow it down to potential hotels by reading reviews and then call them directly to ask about group rates. We once stayed in a Hilton Garden Inn in Chelsea or somewhere for only $160 a night because they were having a special.
