We need a new table!
Don't want to spend a fortune because the kids will beat it up. But need something sturdy that we can eat and work at every day.
I would love if anyone wanted to share pictures, where you got it and how much you spent?

They don't sell our exact one anymore, but we got one like this from World Market - http://www.worldmarket.com/product/rustic+brown+oval+wood+brooklynn+extension+dining+table.do?&from=fn
The biggest difference is ours is round without the leaf (seats 4) and extends to seat 6. We liked the small footprint and the fact that it could extend as our family grows, or for events. I think we paid around $400 for it too so it certainly isn't precious. It's also already "rustic" so new scratches don't change the appearance at all.

We are soooo fancy. We have a folding table for now since we just moved. Eventually DH wants to make the Ana White farmhouse table- I think you first told me about it on here, @T.H.O.U.: But we have no idea how long that will take. For now folding table with an IKEA tablecloth.

It was a hand me down from my parents. An antique- over 100 years old. I love antique furnishings. Also consignment stores.

We have an antique from a great aunt. It was about $600. They had to send money to the estate.

We just moved and I searched everywhere the perfect dining table. I wanted something mid century modern, or at least mid-mod inspired,, solid wood, and extendable. Solid wood tables are expensive!
I eventually found a beautiful danish teak mid-mod table on craigslist. A freakin' steal for $250. It's very sturdy and I think we will have it forever.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: wow! The one I loved was acacia wood, so pretty.

My DH made our farmhouse table for Christmas last year... LOVE it. It's 8' (pictured) with 2 extensions that make it 10' and has a matching bench. We redid our old chairs.
He found the plans online.

Our table is a hand-me-down that belonged to my husbands' grandmother. It's already pretty beat up but still in good condition. We don't have a formal dining room, but if we did I would just put a tablecloth over it to cover up the stains/scratches. I love that it has some history in the family.

Well, my parents gave us the one I grew up with. If I had to buy one, I would buy a solid wood farmhouse table.

Got it at Raymour & Flannigan. We bundled it with a sofa set + ottoman, plus our king bed/mattress, so we got a pretty good deal. DH was adamant in investing in a good solid wood table that we can use for years to come. I don't see our exact one anymore but it's kinda like this -

We only got the table and ordered separate chairs.

We have a 1950s dinette set--chrome with a grey formica top. I love it! Found it at a thrift store for like $15 bucks. I need to shine up the chrome a bit and find some chairs, but otherwise it's been great! It is missing the leaf, however, so it only seats 4. I love it because it's easy to keep clean, unique, and neutral enough to fit into our decor.

We got ours at an antique store and had it refinished to be grey with white legs, and then had the bench made to go with it. The other chairs were my great aunt's, and we're basically just using them because we can't agree on what chairs to actually get. I can't actually remember how much it cost - I think about $600 for the table, and another $200 for the bench?

@MediaNaranja: OMG, i have something similar, it was my grandmother's. Maybe I should give it some love and clean up the legs.

@josina: that is gorgeous! DH and I are hoping he will be able to make ours but definitely don't expect it to look that nice.

We have needed a new dining table for a thousand years and still don't have one, mainly because we can't agree on what we should get, or a budget for one, haha.
I prefer mid century modern or modern (as long as it's not too out there), and I think with our space we need rectangle or skinny oval with some type of metal base and a light colored top, or maybe glass top. DH would prefer some type of dark wood tradtional table, but that honestly doesn't fit our space. Or we could do a dark table with white chairs, but that isn't practical for having young kids. We're at an impasse.
So we keep living with our cheap Ikea table which is a bit too small for our space.

@looch: Yes! Part of the reason I love the table so much is that it reminds me of the summers spent at my grandmother's house!!

When we purchased our dining set 8 years ago when we first moved to NYC, my only goal was matching chairs and a leaf that could be hidden within the table. We rarely used the extension (christmas, thanksgiving, and when we had guests or parties) but we were happy to have it when we needed it. We ended up with an espresso-colored wood set from crate and barrel and 4 matching dark brown leather and wood chairs. Modern-ish but not very exciting. If I were to do it again, I'd probably still get an extension if possible, but something more midcentury, or lighter/brighter. I love the parsons tables from C&B, i Love the marble top tables. Or something interesting like a slab of wood with a live edge.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Littlebit7: yes! Part of why I love this one is the love edge from acacia. But it's a lot of money for a table when we have three young kids.

Our last kitchen table was a glass round with a dark stained wood base from Macy's. I forget how much we paid for it, but a glass table top was a bad choice for every day dining. I'm looking for a new table too. I found a C+B lookalike at Pier 1 for a great price, but that particular clearance table was damaged. World Market and West Elm have some table contenders.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: oh, just saw this--why was glass a bad idea? Just curious...we've had a cheapie Ikea glass table for 4 years and it's held up fine. But it doesn't fit our space anymore, so I want a new table but am still considering glass.

@Anagram: fingerprints. I'm a terrible housekeeper. Glass was high maintenance for me.

@Foodnerd81: I just bought this for our housewarming party. It's a great table and served our party well. I'm waiting on 10 plastic wedding chairs. They'll go in the basement until our next gathering!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I hate the look of glass tabletops. The previous owner of our house had a mirrored kitchen (still) and a glass table in the listing that matched all of the other weird fixtures in our house.
eggplant / 11716 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: gotcha. Our current table is frosted glass and has been find in terms of that. We briefly had a black wood dining table, and that showed every speck of dust and every food smear. blah.

@T.H.O.U.: That table is gorgeous! But yeah, gotta be careful with little kids. DS has done a number on my kitchen table.

@cascademom: we figured we will use it for parties after we have a real table. So not a waste even though it will hopefully only be in the kitchen for another month or so.

I would like to NOT recommend ours. We wanted one that was modern but with reclaimed wood. We ended up with the parsons table from crate and barrel with a teak top. It looked so nice when we bought it...and as soon as we spilled a single thing on it, it stained. And then stained more and more. Now it's so stained that it looks rustic and I'm used to it, but I was so upset when we first bought it. I feel like you should be able to spill a glass of water on a table and not have it leave a permanent mark.
I'm not sure if they sell it anymore but it's this one with a lighter wood top:

I second not a crate and barrel one. We spent way too much on it and I hate it. It's so delicate and damages so easily. CL has so many good options, so I would definitely browse there a bit. I've seen Cost Plus stores carry some similar to what you've posted. They have coupons and clearance online so maybe you can find a deal there.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@ShootingStar: thank you. I really really really love it. I can't find anything similar that I like.
The table is $1100. Other stuff at World Market is still $600 (for something of that size and sturdiness). I just don't want to spend a couple hundred on something that's temporary that I don't love. The cost got up there when we were pricing it out with their chairs. Maybe we will look for cheaper chairs.

We have this Ikea table in our kitchen. We've eaten at it every day for 8 years, used the leaf many times, and had lots and lots of spills on it. It still looks brand new.

We found one! Very similar style but about half the price with the four chairs included. It comes next week!
