How did your natural miscarriage begin? Anyone have bleeding without a loss?

I'm 8 weeks 6 days, and just started bright red heavy bleeding about an hour ago. Big gush and now it seems to be slowing down/maybe stopping. No clots except a small one. No cramping. I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks and had a hb of 138. DH and I DTD this morning, about 9 hours before the bleeding.

Nurse's line said that it's just a matter of waiting, and if I get horrible cramps or excessive bleeding, to go to the ER.

What are my chances of this turning out ok? My previous pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage and a d&e. Pregnancy before that was healthy and textbook. For those of you who have had a natural miscarriage, is this how it started for you?

I want to be realistic but I'm cautiously optimistic. For some reason I don't feel as doomed as I did with the last one, where I had no sign that anything was going wrong.

So sorry. It really could go either way. Theres a chance its a SCH and you just need to rest and take it easy (not bed rest but no sex).

I don't have any experience with this, but I'm surprised that they didn't bring you in for an ultrasound to check on baby and see if you had a SCH. I hope baby is okay.

@T.H.O.U.: @avivoca: thanks. The ultrasound techs rent the space in my dr's office; they work for the hospital, not for my drs. I specifically asked the nurse on the phone, and she said they wouldn't cover it since I'd already had the dating ultrasound. Medical things perplex me. I can't stand the covered/not covered, oh here this costs you $20, and this one will run you $2,000. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

I'm guessing if I went to the ER they'd do one, but she indicated that it was only necessary if symptoms increased, and I'm honestly not sure what it would cost. Pretty sure an ER visit is $150 under my insurance, but does the ultrasound cost get jacked up because it's "emergency"?

@StrawberryBee: I'm not trying to muddle the waters, but wouldn't your insurance know better if things are covered or not? Not the nurse? Might be worth inquiring about! Good luck! Glad the bleeding has slowed.

The ultrasound would be covered however your insurance covers imaging. For us, that meant that we paid 100% until we met our deductible and 20% after that. It was the same whether it was a regularly scheduled ultrasound, or an extra one. It's different for everyone, so I wouldn't just take the nurses word for it. If you go to the ER, you'll pay the ER co-pay and pay for the ultrasound. I'm sorry you even need to weigh the expense of it at this point, I totally would too.

@StrawberryBee: I'm sorry you are dealing with this & for your previous loss.
I've had both. My 1st pregnancy ended in mc and started with spotting which increased to bleeding at 6w2d. Bleeding was steady & I felt cramps that whole day, until I passed clots & greyish tissue. With my 2nd pregnancy (resulting in my DD), I had a gush of blood at 5wks & was terrified I was losing the baby. But that was it for bleeding and at 6 & 7wks we saw good heartbeats (I had started working with an RE, so they brought me in for u/s). So, it IS possible it can turn out ok! Hoping for the best for you!

I'm sorry. I had very similar bleeding at 5 weeks. As you know, the pregnancy didn't work out, but that is most likely the result of a genetic issue and not the SCH. I've bled off and on for a month but am still pregnant, despite bleeding. I would call your insurance to ask about the ultrasound. I'm also surprised that they wouldn't have you come in.

I just remembered that I'm pretty close to my maximum out of pocket anyway, so it may cost me very little. At the time my brain processed "won't cover it" as "the dr won't schedule one."

I had bleeding like that at 6 weeks and 7 weeks. The first time it was a gush of blood - I assumed things were over, put in my cup, raged. The next morning when I checked the cup there was no more blood and the next day I saw a heartbeat. A week later another gush of blood, tapered off to spotting that lasted about 5 days. Baby was fine, is almost 11 months. Fingers crossed for you!

My natural MC started with brown spotting that turned to red overnight. It was fairly light all morning until around noon when the cramping started. About 2 hours after I passed everything.

I hope everything is OK and I'm so sorry you're going through this

The ER told me they are there to treat life threatening issues. So assuming you've had a dating u/s and know its not ectopic, there really isn't a reason for the ER to do an u/s because there is nothing to diagnose/treat. Basically they will do an u/s to say yes, baby is still there with a HB or no, you have lost the baby. Either way, treatment unfortunately is the same so in the ER world there isn't much they can do either way. Again, this is assuming its just a normal level of bleeding.

But talk to your doctor again. Let them know you want answers either way and need to emotionally be able to process this.

I had a gush of blood and cramping at about 6 weeks. I thought for sure I was miscarrying. I continued to bleed throughout the entire first trimester. I did a month of bed rest and pretty much didn't have sex the entire pregnancy. Twice I did later on, and I bled both times so much that it scared my husband and he wouldn't touch me again until I begged him to on my due date! Maybe take a day or two to do couch rest if you can. I called Aetna and confirmed that I'm almost at my max out of pocket, so expense should be small. I called my dr and left a message asking if I could have an ultrasound scheduled and letting them know cost isn't a factor. So now I'll just wait and see if they take pity on me.

@T.H.O.U.: that makes sense about the ER, thank you for sharing!

Good luck!!! I hope you get in for your u/s soon. The stress is so hard.

For me, my m/c started light (blood when I wiped), and got progressively heavier. It was also almost immediately accompanied by horrible cramps.

One of my best friends is currently 10 weeks pregnant. She had bleeding (like what you described + then some spotting) for a few days. She was able to get into her doc earlier than planned for her dating scan, and everything was fine!!

Oh, and not to undermine this situation, but my call to Aetna was interesting to say the least. I gave a quick blurb about why I was needing an ultrasound that he obviously didn't pay attention to, because after he answered my initial question he congratulated me on my pregnancy and asked if I wanted to be forwarded to their pregnancy and birth department to be sent exciting products to help me with my baby. Yeah...I think I'll wait a bit on that one.

P.S. I made a couple of recent posts with questions about SCH, and a bunch of bees with significant bleeding and successful outcomes responded. I am really hoping for things to work out for you. First trimester is the worst...

Well, the good news is my office called back and are writing me a prescription for an ultrasound! Bad news is I can't call to schedule until tomorrow because my office is booked through next week and the main phone line is closed now. Hoping they can see me soon.

@StrawberryBee: Sorry you're dealing with this. I know how firsthand how scary it is but can be one to provide a story with a positive outcome. I had similar bleeding at both six and twelve weeks during my pregnancy with DD1. Both incidents were gory enough that I was positive there was no way things could be ok....but DD1 is now 4.5 years old, and I've since had two other pregnancies (without bleeding incidents).

Similar to what others were suggesting, I was just told to take it easy and take good care of myself. I did go to my doctor a day or so later at six weeks, and had her meet me in the ER at 12 weeks....but this was not in the US and we were lucky with what insurance would cover.

ETA: I was never told I had a SCH. It was just "unexplained bleeding".

@StrawberryBee: I think it can form any time in the first trimester. The doctor said that when the placenta is forming and hooking up to blood vessels, bleeding will happen if by chance it tries to hook up to a vessle that's too big for it to handle and blood leaks out as a result. No cramping seems like a really good sign.

I am so sorry you're dealing with this stress!! I am crossing my fingers for a healthy baby in there still! I think it's a good sign that you saw a heartbeat, and that the bleeding slowed. Has it stopped? It sounds like others have had some positive stories of bleeding. With my first pregnancy, I didn't have red bleeding, but I did have brown and pink spotting off and on from 5w to about 10w. My son from that pregnancy is now 2 years old.

With my recent miscarriage, it started with light bleeding (red), on a Monday evening. I had light cramping the next day and the bleeding continued. Not super heavy, but more than spotting. I had really heavy cramps on Wednesday morning, and that is the day that I passed the sac.

It's probably good that you need to wait at least a few days to get an ultrasound, as much as it sucks, since they might not be able to tell you much right this second anyway.

I am keeping my fingers crossed so hard for a sticky, healthy baby!! There has been too much loss already on the September board

One last thing... drink lots of water if you can. I feel like it's the one thing that's made a difference for my bleeding, and the doctor said it's the most important thing. Dehydration causes the uterus to contract, which disrupts the healing that needs to occur if there's been bleeding in the process of forming the placenta.

I had intense bleeding incidents with both of my successful pregnancies... like "no way this isn't a miscarriage" feeling bleeding, so I promise things can turn out ok! FX you can distract yourself until your ultrasound - it's so hard!

I had bright red bleeding at 6w and was sure I was having a second miscarriage. But all was fine and he's a healthy 10 month old now! Good luck!

Oh man, I'm so sorry you're going through this! I had both brown spotting and red bleeding this pregnancy at 6-7 weeks and I was terrified, but everything was okay. Hope you get in for a scan soon to ease your mind. Thinking of you

I had bleeding a few times with my first pregnancy and everything turned out fine! It was usually after sex. Even at 36 weeks, I would bleed sometimes hours after having sex. Good luck!

I'm so sorry you are bleeding... it's so scary during pregnancy.

I've had 2 miscarriages and ironically I never bled with either.

I did bleed a lot during DS2's pregnancy. I had gushes at around 11 weeks and again at 15 weeks. At first I was diagnosed with a SCH, but later with a complete placenta previa. Everything turned out fine and baby was healthy.

Hang in there and get an ultrasound. Unfornately, bleeding can be completely normal or a sign a miscarriage. The fact that you AREN''T cramping is a good sign. Miscarrying naturally would be a crampy experience.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this stress.
