Our car seat gets so disgusting. The only thing that keeps her happy in the car are snacks, so we do a lot of dry snacks, which leave crumbs everywhere. We have to do a major cleaning of the seat every month, at least.
How dirty does your car seat get?

She's only 14 months old, and we don't give her snacks in the car, just water. Mainly because I have a fear of her choking! So her carseat is pretty clean. We'll see how long it lasts!

She gets snacks in the car but I'm pretty careful about what I give her. So there are usually Cheerios and raisins stuck in the crevices but not so many crumbs ground in. We just dump it out anytime we move the seat.
I don't want to talk about the time she threw up in the car though.

All of ours are pristine, no snacks in the car. We did have a few episodes of car sickness, but you wouldn't even know it.

pretty dirty because i do snacks in the car a lot (all crumbly). I always pull all crumbs I can get out every time I get home, but I was thinking I need to take the whole cover off and scrub it here soon.
@mrsrain: so i'm kind of curious about this, because one of the bloggers mentioned not giving her kid snacks in the car for choking reasons too. My LO is 14 mo and I give her snacks in the car at least once/day but I never worry about it because she chews well and I can't figure how she would choke on what I give her (generally melts, puffs, cheerios, annie's bunny crackers, or these pea snacks from TJs that are styrofoam-y in texture). Is there some choking hazard with this stuff I don't understand? I guess I feel like if she could swallow any of the things I give her whole without issue then we're safe.

@Mae: My daughter is 14 months old and a great eater. She has no problem with chewing stuff. That said, sometimes things happen in the car-- someone cuts us off in traffic or hits their brakes suddenly. I worry that this kind of sudden motion would knock something in to her throat and she would choke (or enhale!). And I wouldn't be easily able to get to her! Maybe the risk is minimal, but that is my anxiety.

ours used to get SO GROSS so I started limiting drinks and snacks in it. I take the cover off and take the seat out once a month are clean it down bc stuff falls in the cracks.

@mrsrain: If you do, I have one tip, and that is to take a picture of the car seat with the seat attached before you dismantle it, so you remember how it goes back together.

It can get pretty gnarly if we're going on road trips! Otherwise, it's not bad minus a few crumbs here and there.

@mrsrain: I do snacks in the car but I too have similar fears about choking. It's possible to choke on almost anything so I try to only do things that I feel like could be stuck in her throat and she would still be ok until I could pull over (so Cheerios = good because of the hole in them). I'm rather paranoid.

@Mae: we don't do snacks in the car either. For me, the chocking paranoia is 2 fold. One, she is still rear facing so if LO was truly choking (like not coughing, but has something lodged in her airway and can't make any noise) I may not realize it in time. Two, when I was like 6, I was eating lifesavers in the back seat of my parents car. My mom stopped short and it startled me into inhaling a life saver whole. I couldn't breathe or make any noise and my mom only noticed because my sister saw me and started screaming. Obviously no one is giving their baby life savers, but it is just one of those things that has stuck with me.

not very - we don't allow snacks or drinks in the car regularly (maybe for a long road trip or something). my car gets messy from sand, whether it's the beach or winter salted/sanded sidewalks.

Xander's gets VERY dirty, but it's mostly sand!!! I don't know how, but that kid seems to collect it in his shoes at daycare and then he empties them out in his seat or something.

@Adira: yes! I have this exact issue. L is obsessed with the sandbox at daycare.
