I admit, there's a ton of burnt crap all over my oven and I'm not sure how to clean it without using a powerful chemical! I've never used the self-cleaning feature and didn't even know I had this feature until recently. I had always imagined that self-cleaning ovens involved built-in sprays and everything, but guess I was wrong! Hahaha. How do you clean your oven? Does the self-cleaning feature work for you?

Um. I have no idea...that's embarassing. I think (hope??) the cleaning lady does it once in a while??? Clearly my housekeeping skills leave a lot to be desired!!

I clean it maybe once or twice a year, or if I spill something really bad in it! I loooove the self cleaning feature. The way it works, is that it just raises the temp in the oven really really high! Well over normal cooking temperatures, that's why the door will lock when the self clean feature is on. Basically it just burns the stuff that is spilled on the bottom, and it turns the stuff to dust. When the self clean is done, all I do is take a damp paper towel and clean up the dust! It looks brand new once I'm done too!
This is seriously the best invention ever! No chemicals needed!

Has anyone used this feature with a gas oven?
Does it smell really badly when everything is burning off?
I'm too scared (!!) but with the amount I cook/bake it should really be done. -
I desperately need to clean ours. I haven't cleaned it since we moved in last October and it's nasty... unfortunately ours doesn't have a self-clean feature and that's what I've always used before.
I've read that using baking soda with water, vinegar and lemon is a natural way to clean it.
I also have a cleaner from melaleuca that I want to try.

@MrsBrewer: yeah it's about 900 degrees! That's why you're only supposed to do it 1-2x a year.

@Mrs. Pen: I've tried every natural cleaner under the sun and I couldn't get it clean.
So please let me know if you have any success! The only thing that worked like a charm for me is that TERRIBLE spray-on oven cleaner with lye in it. The smell makes you choke but it makes it spotless in like 15 mins.

@Mrs. Pen: @thismustbetheplace: I have to say, there is a product by Norwex that's an oven cleaner that works amazingly!!! Let me look into it quick, but seriously, you spray it on let it sit for a couple minutes and it wipes off. It has all natural ingredients too. I personally saw the demo at my SIL's house! I'm hooked on Norwex products though! lol

@Mrs. Pen: It's pretty pricey, but I swear by the products! I no longer use any chemicals in our kitchen when I'm cleaning! Only water, and my Norwex cloths *besides dish soap* Although my SIL is a distributor, so I can get everything 30% off

You're supposed to clean your oven?!?
We rarely use the oven ... I'm a vegetarian (so no turkeys), and gluten-free (newly, and I haven't explored GF baking yet).
Our new oven has a self-cleaning feature that I'm excited to try out ... Prob after the holidays.

I just cleaned ours out Saturday night! Only because there was so much stuff in the bottom that it caught on fire while baking bread!
Ours was pretty bad and I ended up having to use a razor to get most of it off, not sure if you are supposed to do that or not but our oven looks awesome now!

Dang. You've just reminded me that I need to clean the oven before we move out of our apartment next month. I hate cleaning the oven. Why does pizza cheese always turn into cement on the oven floor?

I've never cleaned my oven. It's disgusting, but it came with our house so it's the previous owner's fault. I always use drip pans under my stuff because I hate cleaning the oven.

I use the self-clean feature to clean my oven 1-2 times a year. I wait for a nice day when I can open the windows and air things out. In between self-cleanings I scrub with a scrubber sponge and elbow grease. I try to get stuff off soon after it spills so it's easier to clean

Even if your oven doesn't have a self-cleaning feature, you can make cleaning it a bit easier by turning it up as high as it goes and letting the crud burn up a little. It pops off more easily when you go after it with a scrubber, even though it's not as easy as cleaning up the dust from the self-clean ones. Just ventilate well and be very careful because it's still really really hot!

I have a gas oven, we've been here for only a few months and I've never had to clean it yet. Nothing drips in my oven though everything stays on the tray or baking dish
