Just curious, we would love to have our LO in a christian education, but there is just nothing around us that seems to work for what we need. I guess for us, its important, but other things like location, cost, hours, are more important for our busy lives.

I would prefer it not to have a religious portion. But if it was a good center I would not be opposed to sending her so long as religion is not a huge focus. On the other hand I would really like it if they taught about ALL religions. Which our dream center does.

I'm Jewish but didn't like the temple preschool when I was little so my mom took me to a church for preschool. It was a great preschool, and I'd be open to sending LO there too (we still live in our hometown), but DH wants her to go to the temple. I don't care that much to fight it, and I would love LO to get some religious education so that's what we're going to do. Sundays school doesn't start until she's older for us.

We have the opposite problem. We have Ellie in Catholic school, but are a mixed atheist/humanist couple and would really prefer there to be either a more neutral introduction to many different religions or no religious aspect at all. At the same time, Ellie is thriving there and we appreciate so many things about the school that is is a negligable issue. It does make it harder to make friends with and interact with some of the parents, though, because the majority are fairly conservative Catholic and worry about us because we are not.

It's more important to us that there is no religious component in whatever preschool we send LO to...if there is a religious component, that would probably cause us to choose a different place! Although, we would consider something like a Friends school.

We actually would rather she not receive religious education at daycare, but the best ones in town are all religion-affiliated so it looks like she will!

My son goes to a Catholic affiliated day care, but we're not religious. We chose it because my mom was a teacher at the kindergarten in the building next to it and she was able to get us a spot without being on the waiting list.
The only religious stuff I've seen is around Easter, when they made a few things with eggs, and the mother's day bracelet with a cross bead on it. Not sure if that was deliberate or not.

While teaching her about being a Christian is important to us, it is not important that it be part of her preschool curriculum. The vast majority of her Christian "education" will come from the home.

We did not want a religious school. I want to teach our girls our beliefs early on, not their preschool teachers. Having said that, we would have happily sent the girls to JCC if that was the right place for them. We would also consider JCC or Catholic school for upper grades.

@regberadaisy: Yes, I think at this age, I am more interested in making sure she understands about love and compassion. I want her to be thankful for what she has. I also wish she was being taught more about the holidays other then aspects like "santa" (for all religions).

Not important at all, actually. We had planned on putting her in a non religious center, but in our town, some of the best day cares are at churches. We ended up putting her in a Presbyterian center, and don't mind too much, because they don't teach doctrine to the babies.

@artbee: I had a jewish best friend growing up and it was a great experience to get to go to temple with her and she came to church with us!

It was one of the things we looked for in choosing a preschool. I wanted teachers who shared my faith (Catholic, although I would have been comfortable with a Protestant preschool since the major doctrinal differences are not exactly the sort of stuff that gets covered in preschool!). There isn't much emphasis on religion at the preschool level, though--they say grace before eating and that's about it.
ETA: We teach LO about Catholicism at home. I'm not really looking for the preschool to be his sole, or even principal, source of information about it. But putting him in an environment where our values are upheld is important.

I would love it if my kids could go to a Christian Montessori school, haha, but not sure those exist. I did look into Christian day care/preschools, but all of the ones in my area do not offer after school care, so that's hard for a full time working mom. The kids go to Sunday school, and I figure it puts more onus on me to really give them the spiritual foundation I want them to have.

For daycare/preschool it's not really that important to me, but for elementary school I would like to send out kids to a private christian school. High school I'd like them to go to a regular public school.

I don't want religious education in our daycare/preschool because we are interfaith and DH and I want to be in charge of what she is exposed to.

It's not terribly important either way. We will raise them Catholic but I don't think it will be too big of a part of their lives, so I would focus more on the best school options than whether or not they are religious (unless it was really conservative or something we didn't actually agree with and that was a big part of the curriculum.)
That's how I feel about all the schools they will attend-- if the public school option is really good, then great, but I am not opposed to sending them to Catholic school if that is the better option for us (like, great town with not great public schools, but a great Catholic school that we can afford, fine.)

Being Christians it's been a top priority that whenever our kids are at for school, that the foundation & worldview is inline with our biblical beliefs. It's the same reason why I work in ministry & for now DH works for a boss that is a bible believing Christian... the envioronment of where we spent the majority of our time helps shape our worldview.
That & when G was in pre-school I was also dealing with him not having a father in his life & I wanted the counsel he received on that (when he would act out or start missing his dad & cry at school) to be from a biblical perspective & not worldly.... I wanted the same when it came to what kind of character they were building in him.
I think starting young is so important in building a proper foundation... just like you build the foundation of a house first, I didn't want to wait until our kids already had skewed worldviews to introduce them to God's way of thinking..... like another bee though the majority of biblical teaching DOES happen here in our home, I just wanted the 4-8 hours a day spent out of the home to support that instead of negate that.

I prefer there be no religious education at LO's daycare/preschool. I purposefully avoided looking into centers in town based at houses of worship and ended up with an in-home care situation. But I know if things were to change with our current setup we would most likely enroll her at the local Episcopal center because of it's location and reputation. It bothers me less at a very young age, but I am still not 100% comfortable (I am an atheist, DH was raised Episopalian).
I would definitely take her out of a religious education setting before primary school though. -
LO started off in a Jewish daycare and is now in a Catholic daycare, despite the fact that we don't actively practice anything! (I'm an exceedingly lapsed sort-of Catholic and DH is Jewish, we plan to raise our kids "Jewish-ish.")
We are pretty non-religious but were ok with a religious daycare as long as we felt like they weren't really teaching anything we'd find objectionable. Our Catholic daycare is part of a greater social services center staffed partially by nuns, who are all wonderful and loving and so committed to working with women and children. (I freaking love our nuns). And they celebrate Christian holidays and there are paintings/sculptures of Jesus and Mary in the lobby (though not in the daycare area). But there's no religious education in the curriculum or anything, and the kids who attend come from all religious backgrounds. And I've never heard any of the staff talk about religion or phrase lessons/directions to the kids in any way that references religion. So I'm cool with it. -
As non-religious/humanists, I wouldn't want any at all. Which is hard in this state.

we are religious but our daughter goes to a regular daycare. It isnt a major factor since a lot of religious places near us are catholic but we are protestant so I didnt want her to be confused

My husband and I agree that we want no part in religion for us or our kids. Where we disagree is how far to take it -- lots of the preschools in our area use church facilities even though they don't have any religious curriculum. I'm okay with this, but DH thinks even that is way too much contact with religious space/things. We still have a couple years, so hopefully we'll be able to find a great preschool in a secular space or some other compromise before then.

I agree that it would be ideal to find a good daycare or preschool with the same beliefs as us. But like you, cost, location and other things are more important. I doubt I could find anything near us that met that criteria. I'm fine with a daycare with no religious affiliation. In the same way I wouldn't want to send him to a daycare that has a religion that is not ours.

i would prefer no religion and i don't foresee that being an issue in my area. I wouldn't rule out a location because they are religious, but the extent that it is incorporated into their education would be something i would consider.

For daycare/preschool, I don't really think it's important, though for grade school and high school our daughter will attend Catholic school.

Although we are Christian, I am a-okay with there being no religious teaching at her pre school. We will teach her our values in the home, and she will go to sunday school on weekends.

It would be nice to have broad religious teachings are a preschool level (love one another, etc.), but I don't want anything past that. I see religious upbringing and education as two separate things.
There are such varying ideas and beliefs in Christianity on some hot topics, so sending our children to a Christian school doesn't mean they'll necessarily be taught the things we believe.

I would love for her to go to a religious daycare but there are just no 5* ones in our area, unfortunately.

DH and I differ a it on this. I'm open to having some exposure in preschool but he would rather this not happen. We ended up finding a wonderful program for LO to start in the fall, which is located in a church but without the religious teachings. I feel like it's a good compromise.
