Just curious! Our neighbors mowed kind of late yesterday imo and it got me thinking.

I am a grouch, and I feel like anything before 9 am and after 8 pm is off limits.

I don't really care when people mow their lawns, though I'd find it strange if they did it at night when the bugs are out.

@looch: before 9?! i don't even think i would register it as long as it was after 7!

Most people where I live do it after 7 or 8 PM, but that's because it's usually super hot and humid anytime before then.

In the dark would be dangerous but my husband would mow then if he could so it's not so dang hot!.
I have one rule: after 9am Sundays.
Otherwise, game on. Mow yo lawn!

After dark. It's not unusual for people to wait until later in the day or do it early in the morning here. It's too hot otherwise.

@birdofafeather: If it's before 8, especially on a weekend, I get ragey! Especially if it is a lawn service and it's two guys mowing and three guys with leaf blowers and a guy with an edger all at the same time.

I feel like any time between 7am and 8pm is typical. I wouldn't get annoyed unless it was past 9pm.

Sun's out till like 8pm now so I guess I'd more just say they shouldn't mow the lawn in the dark or with minimal lighting...? In the morning I'd say not before 8am as my personal preference.

Anytime before the sun sets I think is fine. I've seen people in my neighborhood mow as early as 7/7:30 AM and as late as 8 PM in the summer.
coconut / 8854 posts
I would say as long as it's still light it's fine. Here the sunset is 8:30, so I would say until then is fine. Even though my daughter goes to bed at 8, I can't get mad because the sun is still out!

I think after 9pm is too late. The noise ordinance in our town is 10pm, but I feel as if common courtesy prevails in this situation. We live in a neighborhood where there are families with small children. I think we're all courteous of each other when it comes to this.

I wouldn't like it after 8pm. We use noise machines so it wouldn't bother the kids or anything later, but I'd be annoyed.

I was thinking about this last night as my neighbours mowed their lawn at 8:30 - on the one hand I couldn't get too upset because they also mowed our lawn (they connect) but on the other hand that made it worse because they were right under the kids' bedrooms. I think any time between 8am and 8pm is ok.

@winter_wonder: Now I really want to know what time your neighbor mowed the lawn...

We try to go by the noise ordinance, so have to wait until 9am on weekends and be done by 7pm (regardless of what day it is).
Now that I think about it though, DH definitely did our lawn from 8-9pm last Friday. Oops.

I think everyone does it during the day in my neighborhood. I don't remember hearing lawnmowers after work hours, though maybe I just haven't noticed. Our landlady hires someone to do ours, it was part of our lease agreement (added by her, not us!)

I would be a little irritated if it was happening after 8pm. I'd also be irritated if it was before 8am.

Oddly, I've never thought of it! We live somewhere HOT so everyone mows early morning or late evening. I think we're all so used to the noise that it doesn't bother anyone.

@kiddosc: He started at 7:45 and was still going at 8:30. Thank goodness for a sound machine in DD's room
ETA: I've never thought about how necessary it might be to do it late in the evening in some places when temps are cooler

My first impulse was after 7 so I'm the biggest grump of all. Maybe after 8 or so during the summer when it gets dark later out.
persimmon / 1436 posts
I would say past 9 but we have over an acre of land so can't really hear much from the neighbors' yards. The kids sleep with noise machines and are night owls anyway.

Too early before 7:00 am, and too late after 8:00 pm. I don't care what noise ordinances are - I think those are considerate times.

Our neighbor works long hours and sometimes mows late in the evening. Like maybe he starts around 8 or 8:30. He has a rider mower with lights on it. I honestly don't notice the noise unless I'm outside.

Haha, the sun is going down at 9:30 right now and nearly everyone waits until after 8 to mow, including us.

During my kid's naptime seriously, my neighbour across the road has a lawn mower thats probably older than 30 years... the thing sounds like an army tank roaring down the nature strip!

After dark. I had a neighbor who worked odd shifts and he would mow his lawn very early in the morning. It was so annoying. Most people have a lawn service come in the area where I live now. They mow from 10 am -4 pm. My husband will usually mow until around 6:30-7 pm.

My kids go to bed just after 6 and I get mad when people shut car doors after this time! Mow your lawn at the weekend, people, in the middle of the day (but wake my baby up from a nap and I will end you). I think I'm the grouch!
