my pc's have all had a short life (3 yrs max) but my macbook is still going strong over 5 years later

I chose 3-5 but my answer is right around 3.
My husband is a tech guy and he says it can be longer if it's maintained by someone who knows what they're doing (like him, haha) but for most people it is right around 3 years.

The power cord/battery issue you have is common.
