Like the kind that you get freshly sliced at the deli counter? Just curious if I'm throwing away what I don't need to or hanging on to it too long.

Same as @Mamaof2. I would rather run out than toss it though, so I've learned to buy it in smaller quantities.

5 days, cheese I hold onto a bit longer more like 10 days especially if it's processed like American don't judge me

@IRunForFun: Same. DH eats it until the bag is gone unless the date is something crazy like 14+ days. He appears to still be alive and hasn't ever had food poisoning from questionable meat, so I guess it works for him?

Oh man, I'm much more cavalier with my lunch meat safety than you guys! A week or 10 days, no problem, unless it feels slimy or smells weird.

@erinbaderin: I'm with you. A week from the counter, 10 days after opening if it's from a package.

Until it feels or smells gross? My DH has no fear in meat, I don't really eat it all that often so it's really up to him when to toss it.

Depends on the meat: I've found that deli sliced turkey is good for about 5 days, rare roast beef 3-4, and ham is about a week. For pre-packaged, I add about 2 -3 days to those. Basically, I use the slimy/smelly test!

@erinbaderin: we keep lunch meat for about a week- week and a half. I get it at CostCo biweekly and freeze whatever I don't think will keep for the week but if I go a little over it doesn't bother me. I typically get smoked ham or turkey so I feel like it should last awhile.
