Just curious, how long will you rear face your child in the car? The new AAP recommends 2 years or until they outgrow the car seat rear facing specs. I've heard of people keeping kids rear facing until they are pretty old. Obviously safety is our biggest concern! If you care to share, also include what car seat/s you have and the ages of the kids in them.

I voted between 2-4 years, but my answer is really "other" because it's not age based for me, it's weight and height.
My son is 19 months and is rearfacing in a Swedish Britax convertible seat. It can be used rear facing up to 25 kg. In case any parents in Europe are on the market for a seat, I recommend this site highly. I am pretty sure the seats can not be used in the US...there are rules that you can only use foreign seats if you are on vacation or something along those lines.

My 4.5 year old still rear faces
she's just under 40 lbs and she's in a Diono Radian RXT which goes up to 45 lbs rear-facing. I believe it's the highest RF weight limit to date on a carseat (edited: in the US). There have been times she asked to turn around, but she quickly forgets the idea when I encourage her to face the same way as her little sister. They are like peas in a pod My little one, btw just turned one and is in her sister's old Britax Marathon, rear-facing of course.I didn't vote in the poll, because I just dont know when each kid will eventually turn around, but I am definitely in the rear-face for as long as possible camp.

He is still rear facing but I think we'll turn him with his little bro/sis arrives, which means he'll be two months short of 2.

I wanted to keep her rear facing as long as possible. But she SCREAMS. BLOODY. MURDER. in the car. For hours on end. She doesnt tire, she doesnt stop. She screamed for 3.5 hours once. It got to the point where it was more dangerous to drive while trying to console her (and you cant just ignore it or block it out) so her doctor said to go ahead and turn her at a year. We tried an upgrade to a convertible. Tried distractions, toys, games, even having the dog in the car and having me in the back seat with her. Nothing worked. So We turned her last week (she will be a year on Sunday). Its still not great (she hates being restrained anywhere) but shes at least cut the screaming sessions down and will actually nap.
I hate it. Im a nervous wreck when we drive, but it was kind of necessary

@LivsMama: Yes, I have heard that there are really good reasons like this that would make sense to turn forward facing sooner rather than later!

@Mrs. Jacks: I know! Part of me wants them to stay rear facing for the sake of being "little" forever but the other part wants them to stay so they are safer!

I will turn the kid around as soon as they look uncomfortable (after the 1 year mark). Husband and i are both tall and I'm just not cool with my kid being squeezed back there with knees to chin!!

P is on the small side weight wise so weight & height will most definitely be a huge factor in when we turn. I really wanna make it to atleast 2 years keeping her rear facing as long as possible though!

My 15 month old is going to finally grow out of her infant seat by height in the next month or 3. We'll get her a new seat then, and depending on her weight, we'll probably front face. If it's next month and she's not quite 20 pounds, then not. But if it isn't for three more months, then I'll probably just do it.
