S is 12 months and has taken multiple steps on several occasions, but only when she is super distracted...i.e holding a toy or eating.
If she's stepping and we even mention that she's doing great or she remembers she's on her own she freaks out and sits back down!
Anyone else's LO do this? Is it just a confidence thing? She is so happy walking when we hold her hand though and just wants to walk everywhere!

Following because J is doing the same thing! He took his first unassisted steps over 3 weeks ago but he can get where he wants crawling so he doesn't seem to want to walk.

@jetsa: it's weird, right? She loves walking holding our hand and she doesn't use it for balance really, more like moral support! If I try and let go she just sits down, haha.

@illumina: exactly! As soon as he wobbles at all he's on his bottom or lately he's been going straight from standing to his knees and crawling to whatever he wanted.

DD's first steps were the day after turning 9 months. She was walking exclusively at 10.5 months. It felt like it took ages for her to get confident. Even at 11 months she'd crawl if she was in an unfamiliar place.

Steps right when she turned a year. Didnt want until almost 15 months. So like 2.5 months.

This is totally how it was for us to, she would only take a couple of steps while distracted. From her first steps to really walking was somewhere between 6-8 weeks... But once she started really walking, then she decided crawling was for stickers, and now it's all about walking.

Our DD is doing the exact same thing. She's been walking holding on to furniture since 9 months. She's 11 months now and just this last weekend stood up and walked about 5 steps on her own. She's not really interested in doing it over and over again. She's still crawling or walking holding on to everything though.

A week for us, and then another week before he started running. He actually didn't learn how to stand still independently til AFTER he walked!

3 weeks or so, maybe longer. She started walking a few steps here and there (from the couch to the ottoman for example) right at 12 months but didn't take more steps unassisted until 13 months and just now at 14 months finally went to fully walking instead of crawling/walking both,

Ours was only 1 or 2 weeks. She waited until 14 months to take her first steps, but once she did it she was 100% ready to start walking everywhere.

For us, it was maybe 2 weeks. She really, really wanted to walk though.

A week or two? Like your LO, he would walk when he's distracted then realize he was and sit down.

was wondering the same! my LO is the exact same way - she likes the security of having us right there, but doesn't actually need us there. i'm thinking it may still be a while - i think she likes the social aspect of having us there with her lol

It was 6 weeks for my LO. He was the same way with the first steps, he lacked the confidence. First steps at 11 months, walking more than crawling 12 months, walking exclusively at 12.5 months.

First steps a little before his 1st birthday, walking/running a couple weeks later.
