How many days of high fever before you take your LO to pediatrician? We are on day 3. We went to pediatrician yesterday and they basically said there was nothing they can do but come back if she keeps having high fevers. If her fever doesn't break this weekend, I'm thinking about taking her back Monday.

We went right away when she was 104 and she had an ear infection.

They wont see them until day 5 so that's what we do - assuming that's the only symptom

@Mamaof2: She has a cough and very runny nose. The main reason I took her to pediatrician was how much discomfort she was in. Hopefully her fever breaks today and this is non issue.

We just recently had a fever virus for 5 days. Everyone was miserable. I took him to the pediatrician on day 3 - they told us a fever virus was going around his school and it would most likely last 5 days. I try to trust my gut on that kind of stuff.

I think the longest we've had was 4 or 5 days. Both times it was viral so there wasn't anything we could do other than try to keep her comfortable. Poor D, I hope her fever breaks today!

Day 5. R recently had a 103-104 for 5 days and it was miserable. The rest of us had colds. There's nothing they can do to treat a virus so unless I suspect ear infection I wait until that 5th day.

@BandDmommy: Did they test her for strep? C had a high fever for a few days and it turned out to be strep. I felt so bad for her

Depends on how high. If it gets above 104, we usually call right away. If it's lower than that, we usually wait 3 days or so. She was actually just out of daycare for 2 days with a mild one (like 101) and we didn't bother calling or going in.

@catlady: same here, I don't worry about low grade fevers. TBH, I only really get concerned when I see high temps and change in demeanor.

@BandDmommy: Is she acting like she's in pain, grabbing at her mouth? That's what C did - I thought it was just teething but it was definitely strep when we took her in.
Another thing that could cause the high fevers could be a UTI.
I always get worried about consistently high fevers for that many days. I hope she feels better soon!

Well now not until day 5 or so. Only because I took my daughter at day 4 in November and they were like "this is still within the range of a virus" and it turned out that was all it was.

With my DD getting RSV and being in the ER and Children's hospital, I was told if the fever is treatable with tylenol and other methods (cool towel) then it's fine. My babies are 5 months and I don't know if this changes for older kids. I give my babies tylenol if their temp goes past 100.4. If it continues to rise, I was told by a ER nurse that you can quickly bring down a body temp by putting a cool towel over their forehead or under their armpits. Usually the cool towel and tylenol does the trick.
I don't know about super high fevers, though. The highest I've seen is 101.2 but would I rush my babies to the ER if it hit 102 or 103? ... I think I would. ER nurse said high temps can cause seizures so that's my only worry.

I had this situation with my daughter, but she had no real symptoms except fever 103/104, running nose, and lethargy when her fever wasn't down from meds. I took her in at 3 days and they thought it was a virus going around that had a high fever. I took her in again at day 6 and they ran blood tests that showed some sort of infection so they thought an ear infection was brewing but not yet presenting. They wanted me to come back in 2 days if she still had a fever. I brought her in the next day because my mommy gut was nagging. They repeated labs and they were worse, but still no ear infection. On a whim they did a chest X-ray and she ended up having pneumonia. She was hospitalized for 7 days after she didn't respond to oral antibiotics.
I would just make sure you follow your gut. You know your child the best! I'm glad I kept going back in with my daughter because she wasn't coughing and none of us really had any idea how sick she was.
I hope your daughter feels better soon and it's just one of those darn viruses that last a bit. Hang in there mama!

I go in after five days or if it goes over 40.5°C.

They are only worried if it gets above 104 and won't come down with ibuprofen and/or with a tepid bath. ETA: for my 3 yo

Our pediatrician advises to call in right away if it hits 103. I would probably go in after 24 hours. There are conditions that progress very quickly and only have flu like symptoms (meningitis) so I wouldn't risk it.

I treat with Motrin above 101. If it doesn't respond, I will call doc & visit. We had 103-105 for 4 days around Christmas, but it was responding to Motrin and she was still drinking. The doc was on-call at the 105° point, because any higher would have meant urgent care. I'll say, now that she's 2, I am more "patient" with fevers, and wait it out a bit longer. Most of the time, it's a virus and the doc can't help anyway.
