@Espion: I had to get a crown on a tooth which filling went bad (had the filling since I was about five and got the crown about 20 years later.) It was completely painless for me and I'm a pretty big chicken when it comes to anything medical.

The only bad thing about getting my crown was the cost! And I hate dental work.

The only bad thing for me was the cost and when they took the temporary off before they put the permanent one on.

@JessKas: yes! So expensive!!! I couldn't imagine what it would cost if one didn't have dental insurance.
the cost sucks. Also the amount of time it takes to sit in the chair and have the work done. Not pleasant but not really all that painful

@sandy: I know! My insurance only covers 60% of major work and it was still $1200 for my portion. Ugghh

@Meow: @JessKas: @MrsKoala: Thank you! You made me feel so much better. I'm actually okay with the shots, but the last time I had fillings done, they put TWELVE in one side. I don't know if that is the redhead in me, or they just sucked at aiming for the nerve.
@singingbee: Did they automatically schedule two appointments for you? They never mentioned a temporary then coming back for the permanent.
@sandy: @JessKas: Oh I know. I don't even know what my out of pocket will be yet. They're supposed to call me tomorrow.

Ugh, I feel your pain. Honestly crowns aren't so bad - it's if there's been decay/infection UNDER the filling/crown that was already there and you need a root canal that things get unpleasant! I just finished with my 4th (I think) root canal - 2 appts for the root canal itself, 2 more for the crown after. Yuck.

I was knocked out! lol I had to have a root canal, and all my wisdoms pulled. I went in twice for all those procedures. I have a crown over the tooth that had the root canal (caused because I never had my wisdoms out.) So anyway, drugs all the way.

@Espion: maybe that's just how mine did it. He had to make the crown and then I came back a week later.

I had a temporary first and they numbed me for the dental work and then the crown.
When I came back for the permanent crown he said they couldn't numb me because I needed to be able to feel how the crown feels to make sure its fitted properly.
I just remember it was intense - you have this exposed tooth and they put the crown on with the cement (or whatever it is) and its ICE cold - oh the sensitivity was horrible - it only lasted a few seconds but it was pretty intense!!
That was 11 years ago and I still remember it vividly!

@Mamaof2: @singingbee: @PinkElephant: @JessKas: @sandy: @MrsKoala: @TheSwissWifeStyle: @Meow: I am being super shameless and tagging you all (I think I got everybody)...did you guys have to take pain medication after the procedure for discomfort? I'm pregnant, so I'm limited on the good stuff. (Which for me, would be Advil.)
@Mamaof2: Yeow. That sounds really awful. My teeth are super sensitive to cold.
Sorry about the shameless tag, but of course I'm thinking about this now, and I'm going in tomorrow morning!

Honestly I don't rememebr really needing pain medication. I think my mouth was a little sore and I would chew on the other side. I feel like the pain level was about as equal to getting a filling...maybe a little more soreness but not pain
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@Espion: don't worry! It's expensive and kind of a pain but I think it's just kind of like your mouth is sore...not really painful afterwards
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
@Espion: nope! Dentist said to take Tylenol if I had discomfort since I was also pregnant. I didn't have any pain afterwards so never took anything.

@Espion: I did, I had the good stuff. Sorry! But also, I had all those other procedures done at the same time, so. I think you'll be ok! Best of luck and I hope it's not bad at all for you!

@Espion: no, no pain medication for me. There wasn't any pain during or after the procedure.
pomelo / 5073 posts
@Espion: I had a root canal when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I was able to get some pain meds but could only take regular Tylenol after. I didn't feel a thing and it didn't hurt my baby at all.

@Espion: no pain meds! I've had to now and they really didn't hurt. Crowns were a cinch compared to my root canals. You don't need a root canal, right? The toughest parts were a. Getting numb and b. When they were cleaning the tooth nub to put on the permanent.

@Espion: I have 2 (done at the same time), and aside from the numbing it wasn't terrible. Now, getting the temporary off and the permanent one on is really uncomfortable because the exposed tooth nub under the crown is super sensitive and that cement feels really cold/hot (I don't know how to describe it other than it really hurts for a few min while the temperature adjusts to match the tooth). I am a HUGE dental weenie, so I feel your pain. I took my ipod / music so I had something to listen to for distraction.

@mediagirl: @singingbee: Reporting from the chair! Turns out I need a root canal on my upper left. Yeesh. I had no pain in that tooth to begin with, so hopefully not bad.
